View Full Version : Some of my Discus

This is my first post here on Simply. I've been a student of this forum for the past year and a half. I think i've read every post on every topic. Just wanted to acquire all the knowledge I could before I tried my hand at discus again. I tried keeping discus about 20 years ago when there was not much published info and there was no internet. All the fish I had would survive for a few months and slowly die off one by one. Here we are 20 years later and fortunately I found this forum. Thanks to all the informative post from all the pros on here i became confident enough to try discus again. I set up my current tank towards the end of the summer and was all cycled and ready by the end of October. Three fish became an addiction and right now i am cycling a second 80 gallon tank so i can divide the gang of 14 discus that I currently have. Anyways I know you guys and gals love pics so i figured what better way to introduce myself. Hopefully I can get this picture posting right.

Thanks for the kind comments. You guys sure know your fish and the sources. Those reds with the fifth bar are Ica Reds and they were picked up from Blue Gold in Queens. I was fortunate enough to be there on shipment day and spent 4 hours with Mr. Huang unpacking fish and was able to pick some nice icas from that shipment.

You have to tell me more about Blue Gold. Is that a store? I'm from Mott Haven by the way.

Nice fish you represent the Bronx well my man!

Also can you tell me what prices are looking like - especially those Red Spotted Leopards.

I don't think you have enough post to PM me but indicate it here and I'll sned you my email if you don't want to tell specifics public.

Thanks!

Very nice collection! They look fantastic and very well cared for. You are doing a great job with them. I too, really like those Ica Reds, very nice. A source here in Japan gets them in from DS also but I turned them down. I really like the look of yours though.

Blue Gold is a store in Queens. He imports fish from Discus Sanctuary. Its
good to be there when he gets his shipments because he sells to a lot of petshops and the good stuff goes quick. I dont know if its proper to talk prices here, you can send me your email.

Took some pics today before I split this group up. I will be putting some of these guys in the other 80 gallon that is now ready for them. Im thinking of letting the Ica reds have their own tank. It seems they are not growing quite as fast as the others. I might keep a couple of the others that are not growing as fast with the Icas, and keep the bigger ones in the other tank. Anyways here are some pics before they get split up on Friday.

Thanks Eddie. That larger Ica Red was actually one of the smaller ones from the group. He has put on better growth than the two bigger ones. He also has a higher body shape than the bigger ones. I'll see if I can get a good shot of that one.

Thanks Eddie. The two other smaller Icas are starting to get some blue striations on their face and on parts of their body, but its not easy to capture in pics. I'll ask my wife to show me how to mess with the settings on the camera, maybe I can get better pics of them.

Well there was a change of plans from the last time I updated. I was about to split this group up but I had the opportunity to buy a pair of fish with fry. I sold off a couple of the fish from the group to help pay for the pair. I also held off on splitting them for the time being because if the fry make it, I am going to need some tank space for them eventually. I am torn as too what to do at the moment but they will be together for now. I put 2 of my Icas in a QT tank for observation after I noticed them flashing and scratching the other days. If its flukes I'll have to treat them all. The 2 Icas are still eating well and all but I'd rather be safe. The pair and fry are doing great and they are being kept in my bedroom, far away form these guys just in case. On a good note the Icas have put on some impressive growth since the last pics. I think Mal's blackworms have a lot to do with that. Here are a couple of pics from last night.

Here are some pics from today before their wc. The 2 Icas that were seperated 3 weeks ago are back with the group and all are doing well. I observed them for 2 weeks in a qt tank and they did not skip a beat. Never did any scratching or flashing in the qt tank and just kept right on eating. I didnt treat with any medication, I just added a little salt in their water for the first few days. Kept them in the tank for 2 weeks and then returned them to the group. I think I had a little overcrowding going on and maybe they were stressed out a bit. I sold 2 more fish from the group and now am down to 10. It seems everyone is a little happier now.

Well I get home today and I take care of the fry tanks first then I go down to the basement and something just didnt seem right. The fish are not as active as usual and they seem to be near the bottom towards one end of the tank. These fish as soon as they see me enter the room they are in, they are at the front of the tank begging for food. I checked the temperature, ok. I start checking ammonia, Ph, nitrates etc. Everything is in order. The fish look ok except a few have a few shredded fins and they are not their usual selves. I decide to feed them and see what happens. They started to eat pretty good and then I saw the culprit.

http://i969.photobucket.com/albums/ae177/CodOnMyRod/Fish/DSC_0943.jpg

These 2 decided it time to pair up and started terrorizing the others. I was so shocked at seeing all the discus near the bottom that right away i thought the worse and started checking my water. Meanwhile these 2 were busy doing their dance and cleaning the glass and I didnt even notice until I put some food in the tank. They would chase anyone that came near their spot. Some of the discus would fight back but some of the others would just swim away. The bigger of the CB pigeons and the WB were locking jaws and all. I guess I have no choice but to set up another tank :) .I don't know how well that will go with the boss, but hopefully she understands it needs to be done to maintain the peace. These guys are only about 10 months old so I am not expecting much from them, but you never know.

Ruben
