Hi all,
I've been getting alot of requests for information on the Next North East Discus Meeting.. I've been real busy lately but I decided I better get my self going on this.... :)

The Next get together will be held at my home in Northford CT.... on Sat March 6th...

The get together will run from 2:00pm to when ever.:)

I'll post more information as we get closer...but I wanted to get the date out there...

The agenda so far...

Meet and greet social

Discus topic to be announced.....I really hope to see all of our group again.... I do have an idea for something a bit different.;)

Dinner...Potluck works well...and I'll suppliment what ever we need.

Socialize some more.

To those that are in the Northeast USA and nearby...we get together several times a year as an un-official association and get to know area hobbyists in a social setting. We also build into this get together a discussion or presentation.

There is no fee to attend...no fee to join... no registration... all are welcome to attend.....alls I really need to know is if you are coming....spouses and children are always welcome.

So there you have it... Let the fun begin!:):):)

take care,
al

Is there going to be a raffle or auction at this meeting? I still have that 40g breeding tank that I won at the last meeting at Steve's house and an extra 55g tank that I'm not using. Should I bring it along? Al, maybe I can barter with you in exchange for some of your beef heart mix? LOL!

Hi all,
Regarding our meetings talk.. I said I had an idea for something different... and so This time I would like to try something different.:):):):). What I would like to do is akin to "Your year in Discus". What I would like to do is have everyone attending (that wants to of course) send me some pictures of their fish... I'd like to have you pick a few representative shots of your tanks, or of a particular pair or event..the good the bad the ugly...what ever you want to share......send these to me and I will put together a slide show.. and each of you can then share with the group whatever aspects from the hobby this past year that you want to.
Its a great way to share with the group who you are and what this hobby is to you.

Please send your photos to me at brewmaster15@netscape.com I really hope I can count on everyones participation here.

Thanks,
al

Hi all,
A few notes...

First....Please consider sending me some Pictures at brewmaster15@netscape.com Don't be Shy about it... I don't have too much time to work on this slide show... I promise I won't make anyone stand up infront of the room and speak.....It just a very casual presentation....

I can't possible do " Your Year in Discus" with out "YOUR" help! well actually I could..but a photo shop spoof might be embarrassing!!:)

Second... Last call for my Surf and Turf BH mix... I am making this up this weekend, and I probably won't have much availible other than whats ordered ....so please let me know ASAP if you have not already done so.

Thirdly :),
The meeting is being held on March 6, thats only a little over a week away... I need to hear from everyone thats coming so I can get a head count...please let me know how many in your party will be here, and if you will be able to bring a pot luck dish ( this is not necessary but if can ...great)

My home is address is

75 Maltby lane
Northford CT 06472

203-464-2869 is my cell if you get lost.

Thanks everyone,
I'm really looking forward to seeing you all!

Wow Evelyn, Thats a big Change! Hope it was for a positive reason on your part.

I live in a half rural/half suburb area so the nearest hotels are in adjoining areas...

The following are all within 10-20 minutes of my house.... Hobbyists have stayed at the hotels in North haven and New haven that I list and they survived the experience.:)

No Jason,

Businesses around here are hurting... As a matter of fact I had an email from that North haven Hotel I listed.. She found my post on a net search and wanted to speak with me about working with them in the future...thats a first for me!

Anyhow..I would start there... Its close to me and in an area with lots of amenities....if nothing there... try the New haven listed hotel... both these places have been used by members before.

hth and safe drive.

I've been to most of these meetings, and WOW, Al that was the biggest group yet! It's a good thing you and Mark weren't grilling, it would have been a zoo out on your deck. And it's REALLY a good thing we had good weather, 'cuz that was a lot of people to squeeze inside the whole time.

Thanks Al and Carrie for hosting us all. I was just blown away by everything, Al's fish are really something! His heckel tank was the first I saw and they are gorgeous! Going down to his basement and seeing rows and rows of more gorgeous fish, I felt like a kid in a candy store. I couldn't ogle enough, if I didn't have a 3hr drive ahead of me I would have continued ogling until Al announced his bedtime :D

Meeting all the people and talking to them was awesome and it was great to put a real name and a face to a screen name :) The presentation was well done and it showed me the different levels of hobbyists that we have in the group. So much to learn and so much to do....

The food was great too, there was so much of it that I didn't have space enough to taste all of it :)

All in all, a day well spent. It was worth every second and every penny :)

It was great to see all of the regular group again. I also had a great time meeting so many new faces. This meeting was bigger than any of us thought it would be. I hope the next one is even bigger than this one.

For anyone who has never seen Al's fishroom, you don't know what your missing. After being in Al's fishroom, it makes me want to strive for so much more in this hobby.

I also want to thank everyone who brought the food for this meeting. It lets us all get involved in some way or another with these meetings.

See everyone at the next one.

Hi Everyone,

Well I feel like the freight train that hit me late Sat Night is long gone and I have gotten caught up on Forum stuff, so I've had some time to reflect on this meeting.....so where to start?

I was literally blown away by all the hobbyists we had here and the way the group interacted.. Some of us have been getting together for a while now so that was only natural, but even those that came for the first time fit in like they had known everyone for years....Lots of good conversations as I walked around talking with everyone.

I have to thank all of you that helped out, brought Food, helped serve food (Carrie and Maureen!). helped clean up.....Thanks so much everyone.

We had some really generous Raffle donations and the ticket sales there helped out with the costs of putting this together....again my thanks for all the help.

There were people who drove hours to come here for the get together... amazingly and I truly hope we see you all again...In the last few years our group has really grown in leaps and bounds and I would like that trend to keep going. Thank you all for taking time out of your lives to spend it at this event.

All my best to all of you! We had one of our best get togethers yet because of you.

take care,
al

Thanks Al for moving and merging the 2 threads. It dawned a little late on me that I should have just continued on the original thread.
Nonetheless.. for next meeting for sure.

Our meetings are becoming places to be. They truely are a nice event to have. We should start have "Red Carpets" now :D :D

Evelyn:)

I was told that # of photos are directly proportional to the distance travelled to attend the meeting.
Al being the host was the only exception.. (and thats why I am not)

Hi all,
I've been getting alot of requests for information on the Next North East Discus Meeting..

Let the fun begin!:):):)

take care,
al

so... who is coming?
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

hello when is the next meeting thanks

Hi David,

I know you have asked this question twice and let me take this time to give you an idea. The idea on NEDA was to meet 3-4 times a yr - we had our first meet.

I have not reached out to Al on this myself yet as to what he is thinking, but all I will say is - "stay tuned"

I am responding to this only from a stance of a hobbyist that is part of this group.

We aren't really organized. I'm not under the impression that Al is 'life-time president.' :) How about someone in the area offer up their home or other location and a date for the next meet?

I've offered my place. There has been no interest, may be because it is north of the border.
Passports are now mandatory.

:D I'd for sure offer up my place...lots of parking spaces, room for RV hookups, wildlife to watch, nat'l park to surf, big lake to fish & boat 5 miles away.....but too bad, it's way too far southwest for anyone to get to...LOL!! If anyone wants a roadtrip, c'mon down!!

Not a problem for me, but the drive to Canada is long. Although I must say that I-89 is one of the most scenic highways in the Northeast region. :)

Hardly! I've already got that role here at Simply!:) Lol....I'm just the Guy who started the ball rolling, Helps keep it rolling when I can, and often gives the group a place to throw the Ball around in between looking at discus.:) Others are always welcome to play ball and suggest game dates. I like sharing work.:D

As for next meetings...
Personally , I'd like to see something in late July/August..With NADA's Discus show coming up in June..I don't want to really plan anything before as I want to encourage everyone to attend that show in Texas if they can. . If the group wants to schedule before NADAs show..I'll leave that out there as an option for all you to discuss, just my thoughts here.

As for where...I will again hold it here if we can't settle on an alternate local....I do have an idea for one of our next meetings either fall or winter...not thought out yet completely. Joe sorry there hasn't been any interest.. Drop me a Pm when you have a chance.... I have an idea to discuss with you for something.

One thing volunteers need to consider is space , we had close to 50 people at the last meeting....If you offer to host it, be sure you have the space if it rains... or that you are willing to organize the meeting to be held elsewhere than your home....... as we continue to grow that may be what we need to do... Theres alot of options, but just be aware.

Questions anyone has, feel free to bounce them off me by pm or email...or here in this thread....what ever you are comfortable with.

hth,
al

We may be a victim of our own success. :D I think it's grown to the point that many, if not most people, like myself, cannot host an event because our homes are too small. This leaves a very few people, Al included, who are responsible for hosting. I think we need to think seriously about where we want to go from here. I'd like to see us organized a bit more, and doing different things. A few individuals are hosting a few get-togethers a year. I enjoy them immensely, but there is so much more we can now do. It would be interesting to see what we could do with some fund-raising and an account for NEDA activities.

Let me step back a little - as I am part of this group since meet 1 - one of the standing foundational concept was to organize social get together of us and talk face to face (vs. posts and PMs) and eat and drink. The idea around hosting in each other places is only matter of inviting us friends/hobbyists over to each others houses, fish rooms whatever we may choose to call it. I think of this as an extension to any other family events with relatives/friends in normal setup.

Common Goal: chit-chat, eat , drink and get on to the race next day.

I don't see a reason why we couldn't do what you plan to do as part of this setup. I think last meets idea of each hobbyists sharing what they have was a gr8 idea.
To your question where do go from here - I personally would say keep it simple - meet at a house - eat, drink , talk fish, share interesting topics - make it a picnic.

You yourself are a great friend, gr8 knowledgeable hobbyist. What are your thoughts?

A NEDA show comes to mind. We'd need an account (treasurer), and fund raisers like, perhaps, a yearly auction. It would be nice to have funds to make trips, like the Boston Aquarium, perhaps, or the Bronz Zoo...

Asahy,
I agree with you completely- Simpler seems better to me too!

I know my attendance has been sporatic @ meetings, but always have a great time when I'm there!

The loose format works well, allowing you to roam around & talk to other hobbyist about thier various areas of experience(ex. Steve-planted tanks).

IMHO-Too much organization could make meetings seem like a chore, instead of just fun.

***Al-thanks for all your work to allow others to just enjoy themselves!***

Looking forward to summer meet in CT (or wherever it ends up):balloon::balloon::balloon:
