Hello All,
Saw Fern "Big" thread, and was very impressed by it. I wonder if anyone else have giant discus, 7"+ TL, that they would share. Also, please share your water parameters and or any "secret" to get the discus up to this size.

Thanks
Tony

There is no secret to growing big discus. IMO, doing multiple wc's daily when young, with quality water that's high in calcium and magnesium, and feeding till full with quality foods, will put you well on your way to growing large discus.

Here's the secret. You need Heckel genes!

Most write ups on the four Discus classes size Heckels in this range. The rest of the strains top out at 6".

There are tests for calcium that you can buy but I've never used them. I get the report that's available from the local water company which should tell you the cal. levels.
My water is very soft from the tap so adding calcium and magnesium is definitly a plus for me. If you have hard water and enough of that hardness is calcium (that's where the local water report comes in) you may not need to add any.

I do not know what my calcium & mag levels are here in NYC. I do not take short cuts when it comes to water quality and good quality foods. At the same time I have purchased discus that do not grow more than 4 inches. So i would add that a good breeder who sell to a good source here make a good big discus in my tanks too. I will pass the credit to the source & importer.

April has some giant Blue Snakeskins that are dinner plate size. Some of the biggest I've seen for sure. There was some Giant blue snakeskins coming through last year but I am not 100% sure which sponsor was the source, maybe Forrest.

Take care,

Eddie

I purchased a discus back in the 90's from a chain pet store that carried wild greens & heckles. I walked in a saw the biggest to date wild green and bought him for only $50. 8- 9 inches. Even my older daughter who was a little girl still remembers to date this "Giant Discus". Most of my discus were 5 - 6 inches average so you can imagine how dominant he looked. I will never forget this stubborn fish, it took 3 weeks before he ate anything i gave him.

Just curious, does anyone know what levels of magnesium and calcium are high/good? Calcium in my water is between 39-78, and magnesium 12-22, not sure if this is a good range or not :o
