I love discus, but sometimes i really want to strangle them, lol. today i did my first WC since i put all of them together in this 125. they completely freaked out, like i had never seen discus freak out. they uprooted plants, eco-complete all over the place, they scratched themselves pretty severely. you can see some of the marks on them in these pics since they were right after the WC. some of their colors (especially the red melons) are not as intense as they normally are due to the WC. All my discus came from Forrest via Kenny/Eric except my 2 red melons. i got all of them at roughly 4". my BS and 1 of the AFxSS are my smallest at right under 5 1/2", my biggest ones being over 6 1/2", i measured them while transferring them. i fed the juvies San Francisco bay BH twice a day, TCB, Brine Shrimp, Mysis Shrimp, NLS, Bills Flakes. they got fed roughly 6 times a day and WC's were @ 90% daily at first but got pushed back to every other day due to financial strain of light bill and such. pH is stable at about 7.8, i do not know the TDS however. i do know the GH/KH but i can't recall at the top of my head. anyhoo, here are the pics with some description as to whom is whom. enjoy!

P.S. sorry about the sponge filters, i know they look ugly but i needed them in the big tank to support the Bio for all the added fish. i will take them out in a few weeks.

i dont know why you're stressin' about the sponges. we're all going to look at the fish anyway, lol. the red melons are awsome and i like the look of the plants behind the rock work. are they potted behind the rocks? i cant really tell, is your tank bb or is there a light dusting of something?

I agree! If these are stressed out, I wonder how they will look when they settle down! Great fish, health and colors. The Penang eruption and red turqs are my favorites :)

I couldn't help noticing though that your tank is not level. You can see the glass eurobracing half in the water, it means the tank is tilted backwards just a little...

Thanks Chris, that AFxSS definitely has the best shape IMHO, but it is taller rather than long which is why it's not the biggest in the tank. Thanks again

rick! i love your tank! so clear as if they are swimming in air haha i like the background color aswell ;)
Thanks Benedict, i had just done a WC, but leave it to them to dirty it up in a matter of minutes. This tank is fairly old and you can see some pretty noticeable scratches which is why i've been trying to upgrade to a 240 8 footer. thanks again.

Thanks, but my eyes usually go to the eye sores (the sponges). the red melons i must admit are the ones i'm most attached to because they were from the first batch of discus i ever owned (everyone else didn't make it). they are not the biggest by any means but IMHO they are the hardiest for sure. thanks again

Very nice!

I'm sure it happens to the best of us, LOL. i sometimes don't understand how we do so much for these discus and then they do the stupidest things to show appreciation. Thanks Bill for the compliments

Well done Ricardo! Great group of discus and I love the remodel!
Thanks David! My aquascaping and plant experience is minimal and you can tell by all the decaying plants, but i really try. I've been trying to dive into the co2 setup but like i keep telling everyone, it's intimidating.

Barb

They do look stunning when settled. Right before i left to work which was about an hour after i took these pics they were all settled and back to normal, in my mind i was like "you bastards!, why do you look so great now?", LOL.

Thanks Bro, i always value your opinion with high esteem. You know me, the turks are always my favorites. I wish i had a tank full of nothing but turks, but i'll settle for this just the same :D. thanks again my friend.

I guess i never thought about that but it does make sense. I was the second owner of this tank and i believe the tank stand might not be level rather than the floor because my father-in-law installed our tile and i remember asking him "the floor is super level right? the fish tank is going right on that spot". he replied yes and i was appeased. I wonder if it would be a problem down the road? :o

So Beautiful...

Tony

I have heard people say that a tank not properly leveled will have unequal water weight distribution on tank floor and so may leak/break down the road. However, I have gotten away with a little bit of un-leveled (is that even a word? :)) tank. If you are anyway upgrading to a 240G 8 footer, just leave it alone for the time being and level it once you need it again. Just shim it, but don't do that between the tank and stand, do it between the stand and the floor.

I am also partial to red turqs and that's what I am planning now, a 90G planted tank with red turqs only. Do post more pics of the "settled" fish :) And of course post more pics when they are in 240. Now that would be an awesome sight to behold!

this tank is actually only getting 1 WC a week now, and those pics were taken right after a WC lol. i no longer feed heavily, sometimes only twice a day. but it is difficult to keep clean when you go so long without a WC. they really do like it more though, and so do the plants. and yes, i have noticed they hang on the right hand side where the light is more subdued.

been a while since my last update.

what's new? well all of my discus have decided that mating is a perfect pass time. 2 have dropped eggs, a lot of them have their sex organs blatantly exposed :D. as many of you may know i do not encourage this behavior but when the whole tank goes into a frenzy it is kind of difficult to keep peace. with that being said, they do not really beat each other up per se, they just like to keep each other in their own areas, which there aren't many areas since it's only a 125. anyway, as always, heavy pic count:

I wouldn't jump the gun on the IRS problem, unless you know you owe more money?? Many times in their audits they end up paying out refunds.

Thanks for sharing some more pics Rick! That first turq is simply outstanding. Ever since I saw your tank I have wanted to setup something similar, I love the mixture of beauty and easy maintenance.

Hope you sort everything out with the IRS, they can be a pain: (

BEST wishes!!!!!

Sorry to hear about the IRS problem. One slip and they're on your tail, man!!!

You have a very nice setup and some beautiful discus too. I remembered when you were putting the rocks together and I thought to myself, "I could do something similar to my display tank". That was a great idea. Very unique and well done. And you've accomplished the best of both worlds: bare bottom and planted in the same tank!

I am sad the see you have to step out of the hobby for now. I hope you won't stay away too long. This place would benefit with someone like you here. So take care of business and come back with a bigger and better setup like you always wanted.

Good luck with the sale!!!

Take Care,

thank you very much! my dream has always been to get a 240 and have it fully planted with 16 discus in there. twice i've been really close to getting one off of craiglist only to be bought out by another person. alas, i hope i do not have to sell my setup and that i can pay all my expenses without having to leave the hobby. we shall see. thank you all for the encouraging words.

Man, I would take some of those discus off your hands for sure if I lived close. Hope you get what you are asking. Those are really nice quality and breeding pairs at that. Good luck with everything.

thx scott, i really haven't pushed the discus sale like i should be. i'm so torn in letting them go, i've spent so much time getting them to where they are. all the equipment, and plumbing and such. i'm thinking if i do sell everything i might set up a small tank, like the 55 (practically new) that's been collecting dust in the garage, lol. no sense in letting the plumbing going to waste after i got the temp control valve and i got the drainage going. I will probably post some sale prices this week. i wish someone would buy the lot then i'd be willing to ship through Bill. not many can take on 11 fully grown discus however.
