I just fished yet another broken glass thermometer out of my tank. I have no idea how or why my fish do this but I replace thermometers every 4-6 weeks. My discus are very peaceful and no wood is ever knocked over just a thermometer broken in half on the bottom of the tank.

Mine have before, they just jump and crash into the therm. The hard crashing against the tank can break the therm pretty easily. I've gone through about half dozen from this. LOL

My pair in the community tank are always cleaning it. I keep moving it to a different spot and they find it everytime!!! They've broken 3 I think...

It is a hobby of most of mine. i find pieces of glass during water changes all the time.

That is another reason why I like sump systems: all heaters go in there :D

I bought a checktemp 1 digital thermometer with probe recently. I love it! It's much more accurate than the glass ones. My discus never broke a glass one, but I managed to do it regularly.

Hmmm...is the display big? I might try one. Where did you get yours?

Jhhnn, I can't read those LCD displays.

I can read it without my glasses! :DDo You leave the probe in the tank, or check the temp and remove it?

I have this one by the same manufacturer http://www.smallparts.com/Hanna-Instruments-HI98502-Digital-Thermometer/dp/B002ZG8L8A?ie=UTF8&qid=1269058251&sr=1-7&pf_rd_r=1KYTEFM2VR76RFMREZAA&pf_rd_m=A2LPUKX2E7NPQV&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_i=0&pf_rd_p=493388211&pf_rd_s=center-3 and have found it to be very accurate, but I believe I like yours better as it is not possible to leave mine in the tank.

I had that one before but it seems like I was always getting water in it. It was so easy to do! Then, I'd have to take the cover off and let it dry out. Needless to say, it didn't last all that long. I suppose I could leave the probe in the water. I don't, but I suppose you could.

Martha your not worried about cross contamination?

mmorris
03-22-2010, 02:27 PM
I use the same buckets, hoses and pumps for all my tanks. I only worry about cross-contamination if I have new fish - and then they are strictly quarantined with their own buckets, hoses etc. Quarantine tanks get their own glass thermometers, and I cross my fingers I don't break it before the quarantine period is over! I don't know of anybody who isolates each tank from another unless the fish are in quarantine.

That is a very nice one, does anyone know if these need parts replace after time or is it just batteries?
