View Full Version : Maybe metro makes them spawn (joke)...

If you followed my thread about my QT story and treating for hex then you'll know why I'm joking about the metro being a spawning inducer.

Just 72 hours after a seven day treatment for hex, my discus spawned. Crazy, if you ask me. I'm guessing the eggs won't hatch as I'm using tap water. I have a RO system from my reef keeping days if I ever want to get serious with this. For now, I'll let things happen naturally. The first eggs were laid an hour ago. Here are a few early photos:

I like both those discus, very nice. Glad to see the fish recovered from Hex so well.

That's a beautiful spotted, and I also use tap to breed my fish. It's all about the hardness.

They are on their 3rd spawn and this time, the hatch rate was pretty decent. The fry made it to the wriggler stage last night and the parents moved them to a spot up high on some Manzanita wood. I saw the parents cleaning the wood last night and I thought this was in preparation for laying another batch of eggs. But actually, they must have pecked at the wood in preparation to move the fry onto it. Do the wrigglers stick to the wood somehow? I can’t figure out how they are staying so close to the wood. Their tails are moving, but they can’t free swim yet. Anyway, the parents must be pretty smart to have done it this way. Keeping the fry up high and off the sand provides the best chance of survival until free swimming begins.

I guess my water hardness isn’t too bad for hatching. I’ve had trouble in the past with getting some apisto eggs to hatch in tap water without adding some RO. These discus fry were hatched in 100% Chicago tap water from Lake Michigan.

I see if they attach to the parents tonight.

Wow, hatching them out in 100% Lame Michigan water is a feat in it's self! Years back I could get small hatchrates from my Angels and Discus, but now, forget it! That must be one FERTILE male! Good luck with the freeswimming...Bill
