View Full Version : 6 little plecos

Just wanted to share with you guys, the logical progression of recovery. I added 6 baby plecos to one of my tanks, housing a pair. The plecos went through a decent quarantine but I don't like treating scaleless fish so I didn't give them anything strong. After a few weeks, I decided to toss them into the breeding pairs tank. BAM! Overnight they crashed. I went with F&MG for 24 hours, then followed up with Furan-2. After several days, no improvement, I gave them another 24 hours of F&MG and went with Furanase (my choice when F-2 doesn't help). They started recovering in 24 hours as you can see in the pictures. First picture is them just after the second F&MG treatment and then the rest are of them improving with the Furanase. Last picture is of them this morning. Mind you, there are 5 other tanks around this tank, nothing crossed over.

They are lovely fish, and I'm glad they improved. :) I don't think a few days on Furan II is enough. I would give it 10 days or more.

I've got 9 small ABN plecos in QT, hope I don't have that sort of trouble, what sort of treatments should I give them to prevent this sort of thing?

Hard to say man, to be honest, they all took the F&MG real well but I wouldn't advise it. You could have some die off as formalin is not recommended for scaleless fish.

Every time I see a story like this, I cringe.

I obtained some BN last summer with the idea of keeping them with my discus, lost a couple to bloat in QT... months went by, and they seemed to be fine, but I never worked up the nerve to put them in with the Discus... Blkrob was over at my place one day, offered to take 'em and they've done fine for him in his discus community tanks, no issues...

Someday, maybe... meanwhile, I need to use my scrubber...

Sorry Eddie to hear abt yr bad expirience,
to say the truth i've never had outbreak in Discus tank after placing plecos in without QT(do it every 4 months) ,i let them poo for a day in separate tank and then just adjust them slowly (drip system for abt 1 hour)to Discus water
are these common plecos ?

BTW very beautiful pair !
Best of luck
TC :)

No worries Vera....treatment has become second nature for me. LOL ;)

They are common plecos. They are in training! Meaning they are being taught to not eat off the sides of discus. The pair is cleaning the cone to spawn and whenever the plecos get close, they get BEAT UP and chased off!!! So in time, the plecos will know to be afraid of even the smallest discus. :D

Training Plecos! Now there is something I had not heard of. But it just may work and I want to know how it goes. Good luck with it and glad to see the discus are recovering well. You seem to have the ultimate treatment!

Yeah Barb, a little tactic I decided to try from a long time member JimmyL. He was a CHAMP on the forum back in the day. Had the most amazing discus I've literally ever seen pictures of! He has a post on here about his method for training plecos. So far so good, these little buggers don't come close! LOL

Take care Barb,

Eddie

Eddie if you remember when my 6 Stendkers fell ill.... it was because I added 4 L-129's to thier tank. Things went way south if you recall. Tricky thing adding plecos to a tank. As a matter of fact I have about a foot long common pleco in my Main tank. I want to replace hime because of his size alone and I also suspect that about once every other week he "hits" one of the discus during the night. BUt I am too fearful that if I take him out and add something else, even after a quarantine, I'll wind up doing to this tank what I did to the other.

On a side note, with Eddie's help, all 6 Stendkers pulled through and have grown about a half and inch each since the incident. They eat like pigs!

Scary Stuff Eddie! You're definately one of the most experienced people I (virtually) know when it comes to bringing discus back from the dead. Well done my friend!

Best wishes!

Wow, them plecos definitely can handle some diseases and never express a single symptom. Really glad I was able to help you and really good to hear all the fish are thriving! Love success stories!

Yeah man, its a pretty dangerous place (the LFS) over here. Always a serious risk bringing a fish home or bringing anything home from this place but I'm tied. I've seen Wayne NG discus in the tank for 1 day and next day, completely destroyed, all black, clamped fins and 48 hours later, dead. The name of the place should be the Fishy Cemetery. :(

Thanks bro and take care!

I keep a pair of albino BN plecos in all my tanks. I never had any issues with the discus. In fact I usually have to many plecos as they spawn like crazy. I'm currently trying to figure out what to do with 75 babies that I rescued from a display tank. This pair nested up inside an ornamental castle. They are currently about 1/2 inch long.

Damn! I just received 2 albino long fin BN plecos yesterday! They are in quarantine now, but reading this, makes me cringe! However I bought them from somebody that has discus and sells in another forum, so I'm hoping this reduces my risk by quite a lot! It was an impulse buy so if it brings me problems, I'll regret this decision ...

How long did you quarantine yours?

2 weeks but they also went through a few preventative measures. Plecos are hardier than goldfish and will not show adverse symptoms like other fish.

Don't be afraid, just be prepared if something arises. My suggestion is to add on of your existing fish to the pleco tank first, for a few weeks and then if nothing happens, add the group to the main tank.

That pair was my hero pair....LOL, meaning I really didn't care if I lost them. They took one for the rest of my fish. ;)

Yeah, mine are tiny plecos! Around 3/4 of an inch! So I won't medicate them with anything. I'll keep them a bit longer in QT.

I could add one of my discus there, but the plecos are in a 18g rubbermaid tote, cause my 20g tank is housing my 3 newly received Wayne NG from Dan. Kinda cruel to put the discus in the tote! :D

Hey, you could keep them in a tote....its been known to happen. LOL Had a guy treat some a few months ago, in a tote. All are alive and happy in the tank now. ;)

Hey Eddie glad to see you were able to bring your pair back, but I think you can handle just about anything. I have some Red Marble (calico) Long Fined Bristlenose plecos I got from a pleco breeder in QT right now, now I am kind of scared to put them in with my discus. Guess I will have to some time, and hope for the best. Larry
