Time for a little bit of what if fun.

If you could only have ONE strain of discus and NO OTHERS, what would your strain of choice be?

I guess since I started this, I will,...uh...start:

Blue Sapphire

I'd probably stick with Wayne Ng's Sunrise Eruptions. Having seen the breeding pairs and knowing Wayne (his breeding practices, conditions, etc...), I know they are healthy as well as pretty. (although I like his Super Angels Diamonds a lot too, I will favor the spotted since it's not always easy to get a fish that's fully spotted).

I adore the Golden Leps as pictured below: this group are intermediates, but I'd take 'em in a heartbeat. Now if we could get some of the sponsers to bring them in at 3.5 -4" at a price I could afford......they are at the top of my wish list.

One that does not get sick, thrives in 78 degrees and doesn't need daily water changes.

A person can dream right?

This is a picture that I took many, many years ago, but I would still take a tank full of these red turqs anytime. He was only 9 months old in this pic. I think he produced his last spawn when he was 7 or 8 years old. Far and a way my favorite fish of all time.

Nice fish, John. I'm very fond of the red turqs as well. It's hard to pick a favorite: golden albinos, maybe.

Yup, but they are in a different catagory than domestic spotteds, and I've never bred them.

I'm surprised by the lack of albinos, and sad by the lack of any pigeon strain lovers!

Yup Eddie, gotta have some dreams in life ....

On a more seroious vein, the Heckels do live in large groups and to my knowledge no one has ever kept them in such numbers for a prolonged period of time. I would really like to do this some day before its too late ......

Wild Blues.

My discus ideal is the colorplate in "Exotic Aquarium Fishes" by Innes (in the older editions that were published by the Innes Publishing Company). Yes, I know that this is a "colorplate" and not a photograph! But I have been admiring that "fish" for decades!

My current wild blues are really starting to color up. Lots of blue striations on the head and an orange halo on the dorsal fin. Lots of orange and blue in the anal fin. I received them from John (Snookn21) on 2/11 when they were approximately 3.5". I posted pictures of them that were taken on 3/4 in the Snookn21 thread (in the sponsor section) under the misnomer "Rio Madeira Browns". They were sold to me as Rio Madeira. Dale Jordan said that they looked like a blue/Heckel cross.

I saw a tank like this at Sampson's in San Francisco about 10 years or so ago. It was very impressive. I don't know how long he kept them.

I know, you hear about big tanks and they end up putting arrowanas or some other type of giant fish. I would just love to see a school of heckels evolve in a tank.

Yes, I used to peruse MFK regularly. Insanity is a prerequisite for joining the site I think.

It is amazing how elaborate some people will/can go.

I don't know where they get the money for some of these set ups, not to mention the water costs to keep up with the WC's

If I had to pick among the fish I have, I'd keep the blue scorps from Kenny. I like the fact that they're quite variable, that I can easily distinguish one from another. They're also quite bold and playful with each other...

Other than that, I don't know... Maybe some F1's from Dale's Japura greens, or some Piwowarski turqs or... I really can't say... I'd need to have experienced more kinds than I have to really make a choice, ya know?

John, you talking about Sampson from Universal Discus?

My choice would be an Albino Blue Diamond/Platinum with the size and thickness of Hans's Stendker Blue Diamonds which I will be working on soon. Ive got the Albino Blue Diamond stock pictured below and Hans's Jumbo Blue Diamonds will be in my tanks in a few days.

Insane is the order of the day over there these days. It use to be much more informative than now. Most of the old timers (including myself) have moved on, and now it has a lot of teenagers who have little experence, and do really stupid things.
