I know pigeons pepper, but I was wondering what other strains might show pepper? I'm specifically interested In the asian fish at the moment.

Any fish that carries the mutated PB gene can have peppering. Don't really know the Asian crosses, that's something I haven't studied.

Only pigeons and their crosses. Be aware that even non-pigeon discus can turn dark in a dark tank if a dark tank is your goal and main reason for asking about PB's

I believe what Darrell has offered to be true. Marlboros are a kind of pigeon, for example. Pigeons never appealed to me personally, so I can't speak with any authority, other than saying it's important to communicate with the seller to understand what you're buying...

Had no idea marlboros could pepper thanks. Do 3r2s pepper as well?

My guessing that 3R2 are golden base discus from Hong Kong perhaps Dan can tell you more about this strain:)

I was wondering about peppering myself since I just got 8 juvies in from Hans and the pigeon bloods and marlboro red all have peppering around the face and top of the head. Will some of this peppering go away as they get older or will it always show like this?

The sides and back of my tank are black in my small and big tank.

In my last visit in 2008, I saw his 3R2 and I asked Wayne if they were pigeon based and he said "no, but they do darken up when breeding".

Here's one that is in a darker mood.

I've seen that too, Walter. IMO every orangey red fish will have PB in it's backgound. The more advanced strains like Flamingos, 3R2s and RGDs will get sooty in the facial area when breeding or stressed.

I have a sub-adult RGD (almost 6") that has slowly developed some peppering in the nose/forehead area as it matures; the amount of peppering is very slight and does not really affect the fish's appearance much, but it is there all the same.

No problem - I was curious when I saw them too. :)

Convince Dan to take a trip to Hong Kong! I'm sure he'll enjoy it. :)

zx10r,
black back and sides will def 100% make your discus pepper up. I had 2 pigeon blues in a black back tank for 6 months before i moved them out. I'm gonna throw them in a white sided and backed tank, see if i can get the pepper out. Looks permanent though. I think the longer you keep them in there the more permanent it might get.

on a side note, VINYL FILM is an AMAZING SOLUTION for those that are too scrawny to move around their 90+ gallon tanks for spray painting. I just got myself some pink and white... looks great.

Thanks for the help looks like I maybe changing my back and sides to something besides black. Lucky for me I didn't paint any of my tanks they just have the vinyl film on them.

Red Melon, Marlboro's and Red White discus are all Pigeon based discus and will pepper.

3R2 are golden based discus and DO NOT PEPPER. However, as fry they do have a smokey gray sheen that covers their forehead. When breeding they exhibit a black halo which can be seen in Walters pictures.

Thanks for the info Dan. 3r2s are still on the shopping list. How about those spectacular eruptions you carry? Also I assume anything albino won't ever pepper?

Correct....... albino discus will not pepper at all since lacks all black pigment which is essential for body coloring.:)

No the Sunrise Eruptions are not Pigeon based so they will not pepper. As Francis stated the Albinos will not pepper either.

is there any strain that can cross with a PB to camouflage the peppering?

This is what my Marlboro Red looks like now as a juvie. Will any of this peppering go away as he ages?
