So, whats better, bioballs or lava rock as filtration for a planted Discus tank?

EHFISUBSTRAT, and EHFIMECH. My 2078 has an amazing 38,000 square feet of surface area for colonization with this media.

I agree, I have a 2075 and a 2236 both loaded with Ehfisubstratpro and Ehfimech on my 90g and they are great media. If you decide to use these filters or just the media in another different canister, put the Ehfimech in the bottom (it is intended for the initial coarse mechanical filtration), and the substrat or substratpro above it for excellent biofiltration. A sponge prefilter on the intake works really well at keeping the major crud out of the canister IMHO.

My 2 cents,

Colin

I have two Eheim 2217s on my 125 with substrat in one and ehfimech in the other. Each has a coarse sponge in it. The intakes have sponge pre-filters on them for mech filtration that get rinsed out a couple times a week so that the primary function of the filters is biofiltration. I've used Eheims for decades and absolutely love them.
