So I have a 120gal tank (60x18x25). I want to do a BB. Do I need a power or HOB filter or can I just use hydro sponge filters. Should I add anything to the tank as far as plants or decor?

how often do you plan on doing water changes and at what volume?

I'm not sure. What would you suggest? I have multiple other tanks so water changes and frequency aren't a problem.

You could use only sponge filters but I do prefer the combo of HOB and sponge filter. A little movement/water circulation is good IMO. You could add plants or driftwood if you want something of a display tank but its not a requirement. Many people have tanks that are fish only, and I mean ONLY. ;)

Don't they need some kind of plant or decoration to hide behind due to their shy nature?
Or is it just a matter of them getting used to it?

If you want them to hide, then yes. Otherwise they will get used to having nothing but themselves in the tank. ;)
