Hi all, was wondering basing it along the 10 gallon per fish rule of thumb, 4 would be able to go into a 45. Would it be okay with just 4 or would there be too much fighting in this tank?

It's recomended to keep a min of 6 discus in a tank. So if you follow the 10 gallon rule the smallest tank you can get for adult discus is 60 gallons. If you have juvies you can start off smaller and then upgrade later.

I have 2 groups of 4, each in a 46 gallon bowfront. They get along just fine and are doing great.

It's a risk I wouldn't want to take unless I had a place to move fish to if/when fighting ensues.

Its a great way to get a pair to form Jim.:) otherwise its hit or miss how they'll behave... you may have no issues at all...then again....could be bad...I'd actually lean towards over stocking that size tank slightly with 5 adults if I had to.

I found that in my tank the 5 caused tons of problems whereas the 4 get along perfectly. Like you said, could be good, could be bad.

I have full grown in 55 gallon. They were like 6 inch. They seems happy to me. One pair had eggs too

I have 4 adults in my 46 gal bow front. Two of them go to their new home tomorrow. I have a pair that spawn readily, another one is a male for sure and the 4th one i believe is a male too. I have chaos going on right now. Everyone wants the lady of course. They were fine at the beginning but now they are adults its not fair.

Personally I would not keep more than a pair in a tank this size. But if you are starting out with young ones then you could do 5 but be prepare to have to part with some later on or they might all get along just fine.

Mine did not and I was very lucky to fine a nice fellow to take my other two so now this pair can have the tank to themselves.

Good Luck;)
