damage to gills after a bout of flukes etc

Do flukes cause permanent damage to the gill plates? Just wondering as a few of my fish are breathing slightly faster after the fluke problem.. They are not looking stressed and come to the front of the tank to say hi when I am near and they eat well. Just breathe a little faster thats all.
