Hi All,

Thought I'd keep you wild buffs updated on more of the F1 stock we'll have available.

These are my best Japuras from a few months back dropping a KILLER spawn !! The spawn occurred overnight ( that's unusual !!) Once the lights came on in the morning and the female seen me, she started to eat the eggs. I quickly took a few "crappy" pictures and pulled the spawn for artificial raising. No worries though, there still was a good 200+ eggs left. I've included the original file picture of the solid green male and red spotted female.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get great gobs of solid green red spotted fry:D
Fish like that might be worth dedicating my few tanks to a new type of spotted discus.

Hard to say just how they'll turn out, but it's likely that there will be some outstanding individuals. Even relatively plain Japuras are quite beautiful, imo, among the most attractive of all wild discus...

Thanks Dale for all the good info.
I think it is all of the above you mention, specially the guy kind of old.
The last few frys died today all curled up never get to free swimming.
Sad thing she is on the 7~10 streak, is cleaning the pvc like crazy in prep for new spawn.I change to pvc see if I got better luck.
will follow your advise.

The hatch % was great, but the spawn was average size (about 100+). She's looking good to go on cycle, so I should be able to supply good numbers to be ready starting in Sept.

Dale,

That's really a killer pair, looking forward to hear for good results.

Dean,

The mouth is stretched outwards because it is 'yawning'. Usually when it does this, the dorsal and anal fin will be fully erected too. A good way to display its body shape and fins.

Hi Dale:

Day 3 and the little beasties are doing GREAT. I spent way too much time watching them today, but they are so cute! Actually, they are very interesting to watch. They are extremely curious, tough and very bold. I wanted to set up this grow-out tank with places for them to explore and hide, so while I kept it barebottom, I added a few pieces of driftwood and some moss balls. Half of the discus spent the entire day exploring the whole tank; the other half are more reserved and stick to themselves. They all have HUGE appetites and started eating freeze dried blackworms yesterday along with April's homemade discus pup food which they just DEVOUR. I thought watching a dario dario eat a bloodworm was the funniest thing I'd ever seen until seeing a baby discus suck up a blackworm like a string of spaghetti :) I really LOVE your trick of grating frozen fish food, but it goes EVERYWHERE!!!

Sorry about the video quality (first shot below is short vid); my camera is on its way out, but just wanted to show you how they're doing and thank you for such wonderful little beasties (but tomorrow I really MUST do some housework :D). The pictures were just taken 10 minutes ago.

Be careful Shelly with the FD bloodworms, I've had young of this size get "constipated " from them. I'd continue with your mixture until they're about 3.5" and then give them their treats :-)

Keep up the good work, please keep me posted and thank you again for the positive input !!

Take care

Dale

PS:This Royal Japura / Cobalt cross seems to be developing well. I have pulled another small spawn and will have these ready for Sept :-)

Good point, Dale. Just 'cuz they CAN eat something, doesn't mean they SHOULD be eating it!!! They are more than happy with the beefheart mixture so I'll stick with that. I'll definately keep you posted on their progress and thanks again - they're just so awesome :)

Forgot to mention in my last post. Spencer Jack of Afishionados here in Winnipeg ( http://cichlaholic.com/lists.html ) and I have decided to join forces. He has been able to negotiate KILLER rates to WHEREVER Air Canada flies. So if you live in Frankfurt and you want a few Cory's and a plant or two with your Discus....NO PROBLEM. If you live in Hong Kong and want a school of Cards with your Discus....NO PROBLEM. We will make it work for you if we can and at prices that rival or beat most domestic airline rates :-)

Thanks, Laurence. I appreciate that :)

It's been 11 days and I thought I'd show you all how they are doing.

I'll be honest - I was a little worried about the set up. As you can see, the 29 gallon tank is directly in a window. I did this because as April can tell you all, I'm running out of room for tanks :D It's working out WONDERFULLY. I keep the blinds open and only occasionally turn on the tank lighting so the little ones are totally responsive to natural light - they go to sleep when it gets dark out and they wake up slowly and gradually as the sun comes up. The window faces north and apartment buildings so they never get direct light. It works just great.

Because they would be so "exposed" in the window, I didn't want to have a completely open tank - at the sign of the first seagull or crow flying by the window, I didn't want them jumping out!! My other discus tanks are b/b so I compromised and used moss balls, a couple of potted plants, and a few odd pieces of driftwood. That's also working well - cleanup is a breeze and the tank has plenty of hiding and exploring places for the fish, plus they get to hunt for their food which is cool to watch.

Okay - enough about me..........here are the beasties from this morning. And yes, they are ALWAYS this active ;) They are beautiful little fish and I hope I'm doing alright by them. Dale, please let me know what you think. I'm feeding 4 times/day, and 2 25% waterchages a day as well.

Without further delay......

That's EXACTLY what I was worried about too. They go go go ALL THE TIME!!! TONS of mixture left. That's why I'm afraid that I'm not feeding them enough. I am grating it though before I put it in the tank. I'll start throwing in chunks. They aren't bottom-less pits anymore - they eat their fill and leave the rest alone. Thanks, April :)

If it isn't broken , don't fix it Shelly :-) They look wonderful and are eating and growing....so keep up the good work. I didn't realize you got a few of the "younger batch" as well. Those... keep an eye on !! There always is a hierarchal feeding pattern set with small Discus ( the larger fish eat and bully the small ones off the food ) So, please make sure those younger fish are getting enough food as they can become stunted very quickly

These fish go go go go go go go ALL THE TIME!!!!! I have to be really careful when I walk into the room in the middle of the night because they see my shadow and jump out of the tank.....silly fish :) I have 11 - 6 larger and 5 smaller. They are all very different. There are 2 that I'm really interested in. They look quite different from the rest; one is really dark and the other has absolutely perfectly straight lines and ruby red eyes. They are all beautiful little fish.

Poor Dale - his fish end up with the last people left on earth who can't take decent shots/videos of their fish ;)

So I decided to experiment ........
Out of the 11 that I originally got, 10 survived; one jumped out of the tank.
Out of those 10, 6 were from the first batch and 4 were from the second.

Last week, I removed the 6 largest and split them between the domestic and wild tanks. The 4 smallest were kept in the grow-out tank by themselves.

Here are the smallest (and they ARE small). They aren't like the larger ones at all. Very timid and shy and like to hide in the plants. They don't often come out, even at feeding time. They are also VERY fussy eaters and quite often will not eat the same food twice and have no problem going on hunger strikes until they get something they prefer.

These three are in with the domestics and they are awesome. The largest is in fact the biggest of the bunch of them. They eat everything and anything. There is definately a pecking order in the domestic tank, but they don't have any problems filling their bellies!! And before anyone comments, yes, I WAS too lazy to make my bed today!!! This tank sits at the foot of my bed and as you can all see, the bed is a mess :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_h4FCMO-wM

Then there are the ones with the wild bunch. These are my favorite to watch because my wilds are SOOOO different from my domestics. There doesn't seem to be any pecking order with these guys and if there is, I can't see it. Maybe because I feed them so much that they all eat whenever they feel like it, but the little ones are right at the top of the tank with the big ones at feeding time. And the little guys are very clever too. They know if the bigger discus grab a mouth full of floating food, they spit it out so the little guys wait for them to do just that and then they steal their food! The wilds are also much more protective of the littles ones. Dale, did you see how protective the heckel is with the little guys ;););) - she's gonna make a GREAT mom; I just know it.

Just got home and trying to catch up on lawn, greenhouse, fish, emails, mail, kids blah blah blah :-)

Shelly PLEASE be careful with putting these younger fish with your larger. Just like the "4 younger second batch" fish that suffered, these may get stunted now that they are in with larger !! I think I'd still keep the 6 larger in a tank by themselves and continue to power feed....just a suggestion :-)

Hey Dale any of these beautys left? Do you still have the pair going?
And any coming to the States? Let me know. Thanks Dave:D

You bet buddy, I will be producing BOTH the PURE Japura and the royal Japura, brilliant cross ( like you see in these videos :-)

HOPEFULLY, we will have young for the end of Oct. and will be shipped out of Philadelphia. I will explain much more once I get my website etc together. DON'T PANIC everyone, I will be shipping into the US at NO EXTRA cost, NO USFW fees etc. The fish will be priced and shipped from Philly just as if they were raised there :-)

ONCE AGAIN...... I'm taking pre-orders, I'm open for questions and willing to help, and my phone number is (204) 668 9780. My direct email is.

dtb. jordan @ shaw .ca

I was told to space it out for security reasons...LOL. I would PREFER to take orders by phone and will be willing to call you as I have a KILLER long distance plan( on my dime so to speak and like I said before....I hate typing :-)

Well, as most of you know my knowledge of computers consists of knowing how to turn it on and off ...LOL

I was going to save this as a " separate " thread, but now's a better time than any. My original US distributor was unable to commit the time I asked for, so without hesitation.....Kenny, AKA "Acroken" has stepped up to the plate !! Of course, just like any new introduction to a person, we tend to take things slowly and cautiously. Well, Kenny and I have REALLY hit it off !! We have mutual interests and we both can talk freely as if we have known each other a lifetime. With that said, he has taken the responsibility of the website and hit it HEAD ON and I have NO DOUBT that it will be incredible !!! In terms of a completion date....I do not want to push him. I spent two solid days last week photographing everything I'd like in the website, so they are now in his capable hands !!

So to you Kenny...someone once said "Silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone". So, THANKS Pal for your help and patience !!!!

I take the honor to be the first on the thread to Congratulate both of you.

There is nothing better than 2 needful meeting together - well this time much to the benefit of folks in NE area with respect to accessibility of fish.

Great work guys and good luck on the new venture.

Goodluck Dale and Kenny and I am anxious to see how this endevour progresses.

I am very excited about this venture. I have admired Dale's work in the industry for years. He has a awesome plan and is working with the most beautiful wilds I have ever seen. Just to think that soon f2's of these wilds will be available for all of us,unbelievable. Dale is one of the nicest guys i have ever met. He is a perfectionist and we soon will see that first hand. I sectioned off an area of my new fish room for this. No other fish will be in this room. All new equipment and the only fish that will ever be in these tanks are Dale's. The plan here is that Dale will ship these fish to me to fill any orders he has received from the states. I will acclimate the shipment, give them a few days to settle and fill their bellies then get them ready to ship out. I will handle the communication with the customer. Set up the best and most cost effective shipment, which for the most part will be through Fed Ex. Arrange with the customer the best and most convenient delivery date and follow through to see these little guys are safe in their new home. I am not going to cut any corners. The only thing that matters is the shipment arrives safe and sound. I have my work cut out for me with the website. I have never designed or built a website before. I have been making some progress, wish me luck! Everything else is in line with fish and wildlife and my import license. I want to thank Dale for giving me this opportunity. Going to be a whole lot of fun, can not wait.
