OMG, what beautiful pictures. My favorites were the second insect, the second spiderweb, and the tomatoes. Do you do this for a living or were you just having fun? I love the out of doors, too.

Thanks all. I don't do this for a living, only a hobby for now. I wouldn't mind doing it semi-professionally. I really want to save up for another macro lens...to get even closer! Still need to do some work on some pictures getting published, thats my closest goal...something for Dr Fosters, Thatfishplace, or maybe even TFH.

My dad almost went to work for National Geo back in the 70s, kind of disappointed he didn't would be an amazing job. He did some freelance and semi-professional photography when he was younger....I must of gotten the genes.

The new camera is obviously amazing. However it takes some serious knowledge about photography to take pictures like that!

I never knew a fly could look so pretty... :)

Keep them coming

Yes, our definition changes as the perspective changes (in this case, the zoom). Wonder what our world looks like to them (insects and microbes) :)
Very nice pics, Matt! I wish I had more time available to pursue photography as a hobby....:o

Thanks Kenny my friend. Only need to sell 10 APD solids at 5-6" and its yours! ;) For anyone looking for a camera i'd recommend at least checking B&H Photo's used section (most people are like, they have a used section?!). Some pretty nice deals pop up on there from time to time, but a lot of times its just the camera body and no lens.

Thanks. Just takes a little time watching the subject, and looking around for a good angle. Same thing with aquarium and fish photography. You have to watch your background and what gets in the shot.

Thanks Barb. Its called a "Long-legged Fly" beyond that I don't know. I will try to do more soon, maybe I can go somewhere other then the backyard to find something.

Do you have a motion or sports setting on the camera? Try that. Also turn on macro mode. Flash will also freeze the subject in the picture making it more clear. If you don't want to use flash, the more light over or on the subject the easier it will be to focus.

Hey Matt,

Your pictures inspire me to try to improve my photography skills. I have a canon Rebel EOS XT camera. What type of lens would you reccomend for macro shots? or is my camera worth buying an expensive macro lens?

Discus-n00b
08-31-2010, 07:43 PM
Your camera is still a nice one. The Rebel series is still very competative. However, most true macro lenses will be expensive reguardless. The 100mm Macro lens made by Canon is a nice one, and its the one I use. It runs about $500. I know someone else that uses a Tamron 90mm Macro on his Rebel, very nice pictures from it. It runs less then the Canon one by about $50-100 and it might be worth looking into.

Canon makes a 60mm Macro too, and its nice as well, but if you are going to upgrade the camera body in the future i'd look for another other then the 60mm. The lens mount won't work on all of the newer bodies (EF-S). A lot of the newer models are all (EF).
