Hey every one, im josh from houston. well i have a 65 gallon tall tank and would like to know whats a safe number of discus to put in the tank? Also i have a cascade 1000 filter that im going to attach a maxi-jet 1200 powerhead on the output. The second filter is an aquaclear 70. its going to be a barebottom tank with a large size piece of driftwood. hows the setup so far?? im still trying to get more stuff. Will Post Pics later. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

i would say with every other day 35-50% water changes you could get away with 7 adult discus.

I can always upgrade the filtration if i need to. I can get a great deal on a wet/dry with powerhead and all hoseing, media rated at 500 gph. Do i have enough friltration already with the cascade and aquaclear?

If you're going to have a large piece of driftwood in it, which I personally like for a display tank, I'd go with 6 unless you have experience with keeping discus. Obviously the less fish you have the easier it is to keep your water quality up and you have more wiggle room for errors. You could do more, but it starts making things more difficult.

Thats what i was thinking. 6 discus is about right. I have some experience with discus. Hurricane last year wiped out my tank. i had 3 weeks with no electricity. anyways. other then discus maybe 2 clown loaches and a pleco??

Forget about the 2 clown loaches as they can grow pretty large. For pleco, you should keep a Bristlenose Plecostomus as they don't grow that large.

I would recommend you to keep 6 Discus in that tank as you have ornaments within the tank.

PS: You should buy a battery operated air pump if *cough cough*, theres no electricity; that way you can at least have a better chance at keeping your discus or other fishes alive longer.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Most of us that have been keeping discus for a while have at least one horror story, mine was a heater gone wild. No matter what the tragic issue, it always sucks.

well the loaches are scratched from the list. lol. yea it did suck losing my fish. starting over though. i actually got it set up on the stand and all the filtration set up. no water, just taking a step at a time. Cant rush a discus tank. lol.
