Got 2 of these from Kenny's July II shipment. Like usual, I wasn't planning on anymore fish and then Kenny posts the preview thread and as soon as I saw the Striated Alenquers go up I emailed him and told him i NEEDED 2 of these fish lol. I've been looking for some nice wild crosses or wild type crosses for a while. Very very pleased with these. Probably my favorite fish out of all the shipments i've gotten from Kenny and Forrest. Hopefully I get a pair, but if not I'm thinking of getting some nice wilds from Hudson and Hans this season and maybe I can find some mates for them. ;) It'll be easy to find something to go with these. Or i'll see what else Kenny brings in. Here are some pictures, I'd take more tonight but I need to get a battery for my flashes first so that will have to wait.

Thanks Eddie and Rod on the recommendation of the colormax bulbs, these are great. Still getting used to shooting photography under them but they really show off the fish well.

Matt,

Looking good bro! Since I didn't check the sex of these two fish when picking them out from my preview pics I'm not sure whether they are a M and a F...but I do hope that they turn out to be a pair for you! All the best great photos as always Matt!:)

Thanks,

Kenny,

Can you tell us what went into the breeding of these fine fish (alanquer x) or is that a forrest trade secret? :D

Are the solids like I got from the same parents as the striated ones?

I am thinking my cross with my solid and a brown based red turk/scribble might produce something very close to Discus-Noobs gorgeous fish.

Sorry to hijack your thread Noob, gorgeous fish, I debated long and hard when deciding between the solid and the striated. May I ask what kelvin rating are your colormax bulbs, and what camera/settings do you use?

Its no problem Kenny, I got the 2 I wanted to look at, pair or no pair! ;) If it ends up to not be a pair I'll be forced to get more fish to pair them with...OH DARN ;)

No problem at all. I'm interested as well. Not sure on the K rating, I believe its close to an actinic bulb....except more useful for general viewing.

I gave them some mosquitoes today, trying to see how if that does anything for them.

It seems like they are Male/Female by behaviors but still need more time to tell. "She" will get attentive when "he" swims closer...but he gets kinda pushy and always nudges the other one away. So its possible that I either have 2 males or a male and female. The large one i'd be willing to bet is a male and thats what I chose him as from the photos....the other one I took a chance on because I loved the color and pattern.

nc0gnet0
07-26-2010, 03:39 PM
Two females will also exhibit that behavior, alot more often then you may think, trust me :D. Why didn't you just ask kenny to sex them for you (he won't gurantee it but he is pretty darn good)? At any rate, you can't lose out on such beutifull fish, regardless of thier sex!

Discus-n00b
07-26-2010, 05:39 PM
Because I liked the shape and pattern of the ones I picked. :D Sex was secondary as I can always find more or cross them with something else. Thanks.

Couple new ones. Still havn't figured out sex for sure. One is a male, the one in the center of the pics below i'm 100% sure of that. The other its still a toss up. It sort of acts like a male and the other seems to treat it as another male, but the papilla resembles a female (to my eyes at least). Very confusing.

Matt

What type of camera are you using and what settings do you have it set at? Flash or not flash and what lighting in the tank when you snap a picture?

I have an olympus E-410 and really seem to struggle getting decent pics......

Discus-n00b
08-06-2010, 10:33 PM
I use a Canon 5D Mark II on full maunal mode. I usually use 2 slave flashes above the tank, but right now i am out of batteries so I am using 1 master flash on the camera, and 1 over the tank. The one on the camera triggers the one above the tank. Really depends on the lens as to my settings.

The lighting over the tank is a single T-5 strip with a Colormax bulb.

VERY good signs out of my fishroom tonight! My Alenquer crosses are both shaking and cleaning the cone FURIOUSLY. I could not figure out what the sound was, and I look over to see them both cleaning the cone so hard its bumping around the tank. They must really be ready...

This is the first real good sign that my eye and total guess to a Male/Female from Forrest and Kenny's pics were spot on. ;) Still waiting to see them lay, but right now its looking great. I expect eggs very soon. Been conditioning them with live misquito larva, freeze dried blackworms soaked in Pro-More, and some color bits. They've really taken to the blackworms with Pro-More.....much more then just the plain blackworms. Also water changes about every other day.

I'll keep you posted!

You have what I believe to be a male and female based on the Dorsal Fin sexing technique. Oh, and I dont mean the trailer.

Thanks all, especially Kenny and Eddie for helping me clean up the male.

Thanks Tito, thats the way I picked them out of Kenny's bucket shots. ;) I still haven't seen her lay eggs, but they exhibt the behavior a pair would, and I came back from the weekend away and found both of their lips scratched up, I suspect from to much cleaning on the cone. Still could turn out to be a Male, but looking at her vent and the fins I still think its a female.

Hey Eddie, no eggs. I've had them separated for a while. Might put them back together and see what happens. The more striated fish is very very aggressive, especially towards proven females...leads me to believe she is a female. So i've had trouble pairing her with anything. Will try the other AC soon and see.
