I've seen some moss or fern of some sort that floats at the water surface and just kind of trickles down, but cannot find out what the name is online anywhere. None of the info I've viewed shows this particular plant floating. does anyone know the name? Is it messy?

You might be talking about Riccia fluitans. Very beautiful plant, but, It can completely cover the top of your aquarium to the point of no light coming through at all. It is very messy, some people try to attach it to rocks and wood but it always ends up breaking off when it grows.

Here's an older photo of Riccia floating on the surface in one of my tanks.

When it's under water, it looks more like this:

Is that what you're asking about?

Most of the time I do trades within the local aquatic plant group for new plants, but I've purchased a few from Robert @ http://www.aquabotanic.com.
You can also check the "for sale or trade" postings on aquatic plant central forum:

maybe my idea is weird but I was thinking of doing a mix of silk and real in my tank. Reason being I want low maint. when cleaning. Thought that with these I could just shove out of the way when syphoning the gravel. BUT, I like the way it looks underwater in your pic. Is it easy to attach to driftwood?
