My discus tank has been running for 3 months now. Here are pics of when I recently got the discus and pics from yesterday. I can definitely see some growth, but I´m not sure if they should be larger by now...

They were around 2.5" when I got them, and the pigeon blood was a bit smaller. I lost one of the pigeon bloods soon after purchase unfortunately.

The largest ones (snakeskin and blue diamond) are around 4" and the rest are a bit smaller. You think they are growing fine?

Same here. I know discus like people grow differently. But is there a generalization within certain accuracy that says a discus @ "x" # of months should be "x" big if it's this crossbreed.

I'm due to start my first discus tank this week and bought some juvies from a local breeder. I want to know from the hobbyist if their observation of their own pride and joy could tell and tips please on how I should setup my tank. I've got a 75g show tank 48x30x12. Doing pfs with manzanita and swords. Running t5 n.o., low tech plants no co2 injection yet. I've got 2 t5s but I think that's overkill on juvies. I've got a ac110 for water polishing and eheim 2213 and fluval 205 for biological. Is peat moss good for lowering ph. I've got too many questions

I asked the same question. Here is the response I received from pcsb23.

Assuming the 2.5"-3.0" fish are juvenile fish and around the 3 to 4 months age then you can expect to put 0.5" to 0.75" a month for the next few months, it will then slow down some.

Different strains have different rates of growth, and fastest growth is not always the optimum way of growing them

Thanks for the answer, looks like they are on the low part of the scale (0.5" p month) since they are almost 4" now. Let´s hope they keep on growing...

I can't answer for every strain but after 3 months in a bare tank my blue diamonds went from 3 1/2" to 5", my high body carnation turks went from 3 1/2" to 4 3/4". Don't know if this helps but what mine have done.

I'm curious how everyone measures fish. I measure to peduncle. I wonder how others measure. When I say 3 inches i mean the body length itself tail not included???

when i measure it's from mouth to end of tail.

I guess there should be standarized language when speaking fish measurements.

I found this on another site a while back when I had the same question (it's about angels but I would think it applies to discus:

"With mature angels, often two measurements are quoted, the standard tip of mouth to caudal peduncle measurement, and the dorsal-anal fin tip-to tip measurement....in the case of a single quoted measurement, assume the former.

Yes, with the fish Kenny sends they are measured from mouth to peduncle. That is how I picture a fish when someone says 3", 4" and so forth

There is, typically it is measured from tip of head to base of tail, but others go from tip of head to end of tail, you just have to specify how you measured when you give your measurements. Heck some give both I just look at the fish and give a rough guess.:D

Standard length is without tail (just the fleshy part), total length is with tail fin. Most discus people seem to use TL as Hans says a fish has got a tail, you gotta include it. I mostly use SL except for discus (or if I'm bragging)...so I'm less accurate guestimating TL.
