really like these column style aquariums but not sure how well they are for discus. for example 60 cube is 24 square x 24 h. Knowing these dim. how would 5 or 6 discus behave with given surface area?? Thoughts?

I like the cubes myself. My first Discus tank was a 30 xtra high. The Discus and I liked the height. I think they look good in tall tanks. Will set a cube up here one day...Bill

Thanks Bill. I wasn't sure and would love to do my blues in it

I love my cube! I had 6 in the 2x2x2. All were over a year old when I put them in it, but only three were adult sized. The other three were stunted. The only real issues I had were when I found a pair had formed and there was no real place for the others to go to get away from the pairs aggression. I believe this was the reason I lost two of the stunted fish.

I moved the remaining four into a 90gal (found an awesome deal from a fairly local SDer for two more to add to it) and am trying to grow out some angels to fill the cube.

If you can, I'd go for the 92gal with Starfire glass. IMO it'd be a better "discus tank" than the 60. :D

Too much weight on my floor. It's over a crawl space. The aggression you mention brings me to think hard about the tank some more:confused:

You could make it an all female/all male tank. It'd be more work on finding fish to put in it, but there would be none of the aggression issues.

got my blues all purchased. Can't part with a single one:) I also like the marineland 56 column. It's 700$ cheaper, lol, and tall, a bit wider too.
How to get this around the hubby, hmmmmmm?

well with price taken into consideration, I opted for next best thing. I bought the 47 column instead.

I posted a thread a while back and got lots of support for a cube (well, in my case it's just square) tank. 30x30x24" I think they will look great.

Here it is when the tank first arrived:

I will post up a thread when it's done. It's drilled and I'll be direct plumbing in an Eheim 2078 into it with a custom stand and canopy that is flush ADA style. The tank is will low light and lightly planted (just near the top on wood for shade and will house plecos, some tetras and 6 - 8 discus I think. Type is still being decided.

Yours is cool. In my case, I looked into a cube just because I had limited space and cubes are the most space efficient.

Jennie

really, lol, yours is bigger than my column.

Looks very cool. Do you find that they get more of the food because it takes longer to drop to the bottom? I am hoping that my new cube will have that effect (my first discus tank), as it's the tallest tank I've owned.

Jennie

never have issues regarding food. They eat at the top and then graze the bottom

How many times a day do you feed and what food are you using?

Jennie
10-05-2010, 03:16 PM
4x-5x. Ocean nutrition, Als blackworms, tetra color flakes, Eddie's seafood mix but that given before water change, because it clouds up water(they fight over it too). Every once in awhile frozen bloodworms as a treat. I do daily WC on my tanks.

Also my tank is not a cube but a column aquarium. At petsmart they come in 47 or 65 gallon

Ah...that's probably the secret. I'm feeding my fish 2x a day. When I get the discus, I think it's time to invested in an automated feeder. Thanks for the input.

Right. And actually mine isn't either. It's wider than it's tall. It's a square. My mine likes to call tanks cubes when the width is the same as the length.

What secret??

No food on the bottom to rot. Big infrequent feedings = food spoilage.
