Well for what its worth,i would get the ehiem. But i like a little bigger filter like the 2217. You ask why ,well the eheims are the best cansters you can buy. They will also resale mant times better than other brands. But if your asking about filtering a 55 gal tank either one will work just fine. But if the money is close take the Eheim evarytime.

I have ran the 03 and 04 Fluval for about 5 years. I have had to replace the ceramic shaft the impeller is on once on each until it that time.
About 4 months ago I went for the Eheim. They are more $$ but I really think they are worth it. They are so quiet you have to touch them to see they are working, but they still pump a lot of water. My water is unbelivabley clear. The Eheim does a fantastic job. The Fluval's filter good, but the Eheim filters GREAT.

Fluvals are awkward and cheap compared to Eheims. Go with the Eheim ecco series.

i have a rena xp3 on a 65 gallon and i havent cleaned it in over half a year, still pumping strong. i also have an eheim ecco (for 60 gallons i beleive) on a 55 and keeps it very clear, but have to clean it every 2-3 months since the flow slowly decreases.

both good options, i think a rena xp2 would be sufficient too for a 55. i have an xp2 on a 30 gallon and its definitely overkill but greatly minimizes the work i need to maintain it. i also use the rena heater which attaches to the xp3 intake, which saves some space.
