46 gal bowfront [Archive]

I can get a real good deal on a new 46 gal. bowfront aquarium from an lfs. He letting me have it for $200.00 (tank and top). Just wondering if it would be a good size for keeping discus in? Will be putting in 6 discus of 3" to 4" size.

The general rule is 10 gallon to each discus to allow for proper growth and development.

I even go with less discus per gallon than that, so 6 in a 46 gallon would be too much. You could probably do 5 but you would need to do more frequent water changes and that many may look overcrowded when they reach adulthood.

I also have a 46 bow front and considered keeping discus but was strongly encouraged not too (different forum). Reason being that discus need more that 36 inches of swimming space and to not go smaller than a 55. So I bought a 100 gallon with 60 inches of length. :D

Honestly you can also get a better deal on craigslist if that is a consideration. I bought a 75 gallon with stand for $200.

the extra cost is for the BOWFRONT> you can get a 75 gallon for about $170 new at any pet store.. or yes.. cheaper on ebay

You can get plenty of bow fronts on craigslist also. I would not bother with ebay unless you can PU. Shipping costs will kill you.

Thanks for the replies, I kind of thought also it would be too small. I have my discus now in a 72 gal. bowfront and it look like a real good size. Lots of swimming space for my 6 discus. I will probably go with a 75 gal for my next discus tank cost wise. Warlock, I am also watching Texas and Nebraska, real disappointed in there performace today as I am a Nebraskan residence. I thought they would do better after last week with Kansas State
