I briefly entertained the idea of keeping wilds and then started to play with my water which is pretty hard and with help from other members decided I can not really accommodate their water requirements without significant water mucking on my part which as a beginner is a horrible idea.

So my question is what domestics strains resemble wild discus? I did look thought the strains thread but did not see anything. Thanks for any help.

Depends on where you get them. Your best bet is to get some domestic bred wilds.

If you go to Hans website and at the top and look under the section called from small to big. You will see pics of Alenquer, Santarem, Tefe. I have a Alenquer and Santarem from him great looking fish.

Yes, but he ships his fish to Kenny H (acroken) located in the US and then Kenny ships them to US customers.

Nice, lots of color. What kind of wood do you have in that tank?

Just some fake stuff I got from petsmart. I didn't want to fool with any real wood or plants.

The tank is 120 x 50 x 74 cm and holds 116 US gallons (440 litres). Fish are fed on frozen bloodworm, mysis, beefheart mix and peas.
All I can tell you about water parameters is that the PH is 6 and the temperature is 30C. I tend not to measure hardness, nitrate/nitrite, etc. For me, it's all about acclimatisation and stability. If there's something wrong, the fish will let you know and adjustments can be made accordingly.
Lighting is subdued with a cover of salvinia natans.

You could keep with real thing with a ph like that...Peas, like english peas. The little round green ones. First I heard about that. I agree that you develop a feel for the animals in your care and know at the gut level when something is wrong.

:) Yeah, the little round green peas. Easy to prepare (just boil and split) and the fish love 'em.
I keep the real thing too.. Heckels and Blues.

I asked and received Han's price list and am considering a mixed group Santarem and Tefe. He has 2.5, 3+, 4, 5 and 6-7 inches sizes available. So here's the rub, which size? When did discus reach a stage where they can be feed 3 or 4 times (or less) a day.

I'm pretty sure the 2.5 and 3+ inches still in the high input and output stages. But what about the 4 in?

4" discus still require an enormous amount of food on a daily basis if their keeper wants them to get big. They're not adults, but more like hungry teenagers. They actually need more food per day than smaller fish... 5" discus are kinda like 14 year old humans- they may be sexually mature, but they still have a lot of growing to do...

The difference in body mass between a 4" discus and a 6" discus is enormous...
