Is any one on simply using this filter media or has any experience with this product. I'm thinking of using it in my new discus tank i'm setting up. Here is some information on this product.

Dale Jordan is using it, and seems to think highly of it. Can't find the thread, or I'd link it.

I'm also intrigued by the stuff because of the self cleaning properties. I'm pretty sure it would need a lot of air to make it work as intended, or some kind of noisy inlet, like this-

Most often used in a trickle tower/bakki tower.

Kaldnes is designed to work in what is called a moving bed. Usually in a conatiner with air making it move. I have used this in the past but found the K1 too small for my application in a sump, K3 on the other hand would have been perfect. A friend now has the K1 in his koi filter.

Moving bed bio reactors are one of the best biological filters you can have. I have a custom made system on my 300 gallon tank that I absolutely love. Because the bed is constantly moving via the addition of air, it will never develop the thick bio-floc which can choke out the nitrifiers.

We have been offering them for many years and use them almost exclusively on all systems that we design/install.

works great in a sump... with 2 proviso's

1 you can contain the media when the power is off & the sump fills
2 you can provide enough flow or enough air to keep it circulating

I have about 100l of the stuff in a "fluidised chamber" on my ray tank...needs about 20lpm air from 3x 2" airstones running flat out to keep it moving, but ammonia & nitrite are always nil

no, and would be difficult to take.... basically standard sump chamber, but with plastic mesh fitted on top of teh dividers up to the top of the tank so the media cant float out if the water level rises, final out from the media is at the bottom, then up over a wier into the last chamber to be pumped out.
