Yes, another one to add to the long list of these threads :o

I'm thinking female but having never done this before I'd love some feedback.

Thanks guys :) Now if only the other one would drop it's papilla... It doesn't seem to be interested at all. Would this increase the odds that the other one would be female too? Do male discus normally pass up such an opportunity? They have exhibited some spawning behaviour for several days but the one in the picture has had her tube out on and off for 3 days now with nothing from the other one.

that discus is real pumped up, female for sure (thick and lose papilla).

You should have included a picture of the whole body. Some of us use the Dorsal - Tail method.

Hi Tito,

I believe the picture shown in pic1 is clear enough, it is blunt and not sharp/triangular looking like that of a male.

She produced eggs last night and still no response from the other one. She has one tangent line passing through the tail and one that doesn't. Same with our other discus. When we bought her both tangent lines went nowhere near her tail, she was so obviously a male :p

I have to say I am a bit jealous. Mine aren't as obvious as your female was, at least I don't think.

Has to be an adult and you are looking for the Dorsal fin missing or striking the tail.

only the dorsal? if that's the case that could clear up some confusion

If you go by the dorsal fin then that female is still definitely a male :p I'm not sure where adult begins but she's around 4" TL and the other is around 5". We bought them a few months ago at about an inch smaller each. I'm not sure about growth rates but they each came from a store so they may very well be stunted.

Nope! The Dorsal continues to just over the tail - I would have guessed female solely on this observation. The imaginary line extending from the Dorsal should angle away from the tail. In this case - the line would just about hit the tail.

If she would have been fully developed it would have been even easier to tell.

Still - nice fish! I'm speaking of the Snake skin. Could still be a male though. Because they appear to be a little runted - it's harder to tell. I have a BD like that - I'm still trying to figure it's gender!

I see your point wityh the Turq. But she is confirmed female - so hopefully the snakeskin is a male. nice fish to play around with.

I guess I just can't draw straight lines. That's definitely been confirmed on paper countless times!

Thank you :) I don't think we'll ever breed them. I think we're planning to get some more in January and we'll grow them out ourselves and they'll be better quality. Even then... We'd have to install an RO system and that's not in the cards anywhere in the near future. Our water is liquid rock so we'd use a lot of it :p
