so i was about to do my daily water change in my grow out tanks.. and i got to bug to separate them out by size *wish me luck mr. wattley!*.. instead of just mixed... i have some that were just growing way faster then some of the others.. so i have 14 in the 30g and 15 small ones in the 29g.. i think they will be better off that way.. and i am hoping to get some faster growth from my kiddie discus... figured they had to fight off the bigger brothers and sisters.. and they were losing.. i took pics.. i will post them up tomorrow..

i know some of ya'll do the same..and others just never bother with this method.. but i figured, why not.. i will find out for myself ... wish me luck! : )))

I find it hard to believe you're going to need much luck if you're following a Jack Wattley tip. :) Can't wait to hear what you think of your results.

Hey, some of them are getting some very nice colors, body and fin shape. Best of luck growing them out.

i think the little ones were getting hidden by the larger siblings.. once i seperated them out.. i was a little suprised at the size difference.. idk if they are stunted or just slow growers.. but i switched out, figured it wouldn't hurt..!

Jorge.. thanks.. i am really suprised at how fast the big guys grew out AND how nice their shapes are (at least they are nice shapes to me.. but what do i know)... i am getting a little impatient on the color to start coming out on them.. so i can tell the diff. between the FlachenxSS, LSS & Blue Turks.. LOL

That's a good method. I almost always did it that way when I was breeding discus.

Matt.. do you think it will help the smaller batch grow better in you opinion?

I've had smaller discus catch up, and in some cases pass the size of their siblings by sorting them out. It wasn't 100% of the time. I was always in the habit of culling the smallest fish early on. I would just look for the average size of a spawn. Those that were below the small end of the bunch were culled. Then I would take the biggest out as they grew. I am a believer in the Wattley growth inhibiting toxin theory.

thanks vera.. thanks moon :)

yes.. i do need more space.. i have recently picked up 2-75g and 60 cube (for bedroom) all for $1 a gallon!! :) i will be setting them up soon
and as an early bday present to myself.. i just purchased 2 penang eruptions and will probably pick up a few more :))
but i need to sell off the 10 slow guys to make more room!!

i was a little surprised to see that the largest of the slow growers was about 3.5inches!! that means.. the big/brothers and sisters are much bigger.. big enough to know, i dont want catch them and try to measure LOL!!!
