I have a 75 g tank of 4 discus. Currently I am using a single 250W Marineland heater but due to colder weather, water temperature never reach 86F, only kept at 79F. Ambient temperature is 62-68F. What kind and brandname of heater do you guys recommend? Thanks.

I have 3 heaters in my tank, not something eveyone will agree with. My tanks always stay at the right temp and if one breaks then there is always a spare there and my fish wont get cold. I use sera, they come with a 3 year warranty.

i've had an issue with heater sticking on like the eheim jager, however it is fair to say that i have had it for 3 yrs and it is expected to malfunction since it has been that long. i would suggest having a few heaters heating your water just incase one sticks on.

i have 2 250 watt stealth pros in my 180G. id go with marineland, due to having a limited lifetime warranty. i had 2 300 watt visi-therm units fail last week, called marineland, expecting to receive brand new units monday or tuesday.

as for the stealth pros: 82.5 on exactly, most of the day. might be warmer, but never cooler than 82.5

I agree here except I use 2 instead of 3 in my tanks just in case one fails on me......I have both Marineland and EHEIM.....Like them both.

2 heaters here now that winter is keeping the house cold, still the Eheims are doing better for me than any other.

I use eheim jagar, simple really. Best quality out there, all of you guys should be using independent temperature contorllers, they shut off your heaters in case of a stick on, and can alert you if the tank drops below a certain temperature (like when a heater isnt working) they are so much better then the cheap thermostats that come preinstalled in aquarium heaters!

FYI, heater formula:

Gallons x 8.33 x Delta T / 3414 = kW
(Delta T= Desired temp - ambient temp)
kW/ hours of heat up time = size of heater required (given in kW)

75 x 8.33 x 20 = 12495 BTU / 3414 = 3.67 kW

3.67 kW / 8 hours = 0.458 kW heater (450W)

450W heater if he wants to maintain a rock steady 86F if the ambient is in the low to mid 60's.

Two heaters both capable of maintaining the temperature is the way to go. If one fails completely the temperature will be maintained. If one sticks on the other one will stay off and the temperature will be maintained.

There is a decent calculator here: http://www.kernsanalysis.com/HeaterCalculator.cgi

i've had eheim b4, it stuck on after a year or 2. well i guess you can't expect anything to last forever, but i think the via aqua ones are great. avoid the jali titanium heater though, that one lasted me 2 weeks. I heard the fluval E are very good.

I dunno about the formula up above. I have a 250W jager in my 65g (not quite 75g as in the example, but not that far off) and it maintains a steady 85 degrees in a room which is always at 62 degrees. It works hard during the winter, but gets the job done. 450W might be overkill, unless you want two heaters for the reasons noted.

My next heater will be the inline ones. Jagers are humongous and quite the eye sore in the tank (I place mine horizontally).

Heaters, all depends on set up.
Ryan,
your formula only suggests required heater wattage to raise tank temp by 20deg in 8 hours. Nothing to do with maintaining temp @86

mjs165446454 (lol)

that formula also incorrect. Showed that i need a 230W heater for my 500gal plywood tank(one day). 230W for 500gal???? I wishhh

I would;
1.make sure the heater works
2.isolate the tank if not done already
3. buy another 250 and place them on opposite walls

I had a brand new Stealth Pro blow up, kill a dozen corys, although the Oceanic tank survived. The moment this happened, I took all the Stealth Pros out of my breeder tanks (I had ordered half a dozen mailorder). These and the NIB ones are no longer in my fishroom.

In the past six months, two other aquarists in the Twin Cities have had their new Stealth Pros explode. One of them blew out a 220 gal tank and killed a prized flowerhorn.
