My labs are developing large black spots around their mouth and face. They seem to be getting bigger too. Any idea what this could be? I don't think its black spot disease because of the size of the spots.

The proper name is Electric Yellow Labido - Labidochromis Caeruleus.
I found when i had them many years ago...that a high spirulina flake diet would cause this.

Oh crap...I posted it already before I read it's really a dog.

My yellow lab really gets spotty when she finds a mud hole to roll in. Cleans up nice with a hose.

LOL....... This an aquarium forum right? These are fish! LOL........ Thanks for the info about the spirulina. I do feed them spirulina at least every other day. That may be the culprit and that won't harm them I hope. I'll cut back on the spirulina. I'll keep a good eye on them in case it's not from spirulina. Any other ideas?

well Crap, that must be what wrong with my GSP. Too much spirulina in diet. I find washing her does not get rid of spots

Hi all, very, very, very new to keeping Discus. But seeing this is about yellow labs ( yes the fish not the dog) and thats where my fish keeping has come from the past 2 years i could interject a bit. sometimes Cichlids go thru stages like this with black spots coming and going, may be nothing to it but not ruling out there might be danger there either. should definitely keep an eye on 'em. Also, A high spurilina diet is recommended for African Cichlids, although if that is the only thing your feeding your lab, you may want to give them some variety. "fresh" veggies is a good choice. Sorry, just my 2 cents.

Thanks dghby! I was beginning to think that I wasn't going to get any more serious information. At times like these one needs serious answers, especially when faced with something they have never experienced before. Thanks again for the feedback!
