I have discus in different sizes between 2.5 to 4 inches. Can anyone tell me how old are they? and when they will pick their mates? I am having a hard time to post pics, but i'll resize them later.

Thank you,

This, by far, has been the most reliable method for me ...

The basic idea is, you have to deep fry them, and that the older they are, the longer it takes for them to get golden brown.

I'm not going to try to offer you exact figures, since the figures depend on:
- the type of frying oil that u r using, and it's "burn" temp
- the temp of your frying oil at dip time
- the viscousity of your frying oil (which, of course, is dependent on the tye & temp of your oil)
- the pigs' genetics
- what you are feeding them, and how often
- and, of course, your WC regiment
- and, don't forget, the size of your mojo while your are excercizing the exorcism; very, very important

Best to try it out yourself, and plot the results. Then, and only then, will you have the exacting baseline that you are seeking.

P.S. Sorry for the hijack, but I could not resist :-)

You have to deep fry them.

The older they are, the longer it takes for them to get golden brown.

I tried that, but now they just float in the tank.

I was going to say cut them in half and count the rings..

They should be anywhere from 3 months to 9. If you bought them from a breeder they should be able to give you an estimate. If they are not from a breeder there is no real way of knowing.

The forum is Priceless. Love it!
Man-o-man, all of you have given very interesting opinions.

You have covered the obvious so I'll start with... How many of them do you have and were they bought from the same source?
Once you post some pics, some of the more experienced members maybe able to determine if they are stunted or an approx. age in months.
There is no guarantee that any pairs will form.

i thought the stripes revealed their age?

Depends on the strain.

The stripes also can mean that they are stressed out, instead of their age.

so how long do it take them to 4 inches???

I have never bred. So this is SIMPLY a guess based on my observations ... 4 to 5 months.

Breeders, please step in and slap me, as necessary.

Assuming they are juvies......Under optimal condition, they can grow 0.5" per month.

1" per month for the first two months under optimal conditions ime
