about to start my new tank.

using the method of 4 to 5 watts per gallon figured 600w would be good especially considering i am planning on a discus tank that has higher temps.

i ordered two jager 300w heaters. when i got them in they say they are rated for 159 to 264 gallons each.

my question is should i use both or just put one in and keep the other as backup

You can use both if you want, but you only need one. I use 1-250 watt Jager in a 150 gal. discus tank kept at 86 F, and it's fine, and 2-250 watt Jager heaters in a 240 gal. with a 55 gal. sump. Using 2- 300 watters on a tank under 150 gals. is unnecessary.

Darell, do you think one 300 would be ok with a lower room temperature of, say, 68 degrees. I would add that tank insulation might come into play.

On a 150 gal. tank for example, I would say yes, if the heater was a Jager. From experience, I don't trust other brands. My tanks are non insulated, and the room temp. is around 70 F year round.

Keep both and use one as a backup. Having 2 doesn't hurt but not really necessary for a 48" wide tank in living space. Keep in mind that these Jager heater are big so putting 2 in a show tank doesn't look good (IMHO). If I was doing a show tank like yours, I would use the Jager with an inline heater module or get a Hydor inline. I know most people trust the Jager over other brand but I use a single inline Hydor in my 90gal. My tank has a controller so I get alert instantly when it fails.
