Several months ago I made the decision that I wanted to work with some red domestics. At that time I decided to try and find some San Merah's to work with. Well I struck out. None of the big sponsors here had seen any available for some time. Internet searches didn't help either. It was suggested to me to go with Red Covers instead and thats what I did. I have some coming in with Kevin's (notjustfish) current order from Lucky Tropicals.

During my search I ran across some other discus that peaked my interest. Dan Espinosa at Elite Aquaria had listed some Wayne NG Red Pupil Golden Red. I called and talked with Dan and found out that this is a albino strain that Wayne used to first create his Albino 3R2's. Dan had some of the albinos and intermediates. I decided that these guys would be a great addition to my red project. Well they arrived this morning. Dan's packing is superb and they went in the tank like they hadn't been packed in a box for 15 hours. So here is what was in the box.............1 male and 2 female golden red albinos and two female red golden intermediates. They have only been in the tank for about 9 hours but here are some pictures. The red covers should arrive in a week or so.

If you ever have the opportunity to get some discus from Dan at Elite you won't be dissappointed. Dan is a pleasure to work with and his discus are superb!! Give him a try, you will definitely be glad you did.

Thanks , I am very pleased with them. Before they came to me Dan said the male was cavorting around with all the females and had wigglers with one of the intermediates. Hopefully when they get settled in he will get back to business again.

Well it took 4 days lol, but the male and one of the intermediates spawned last night. I put a piece of poret in the quarantine tank to divide them from the others and they have a couple hundred eggs on the cone.

nice red .did u ask what they feed them to make that red?

I don't think Dan or Wayne feed them enhancers. 3R2 are very red fish.

The fry have attached.

Bugman and Arjunpun

The female 3R2s are very red fish, when breeding their color gets even redder than normal. These fish have been feed a mixture of Shrimp w/Beef heart. I added 1 TSP of Pure Spirulina and 1 TSP of Pure Natrurose per 1lb. This has been feed 2-3 times per week.

Congrats on the fry. Remember I get first dibs on them when you sell them...

It was a very small spawn and I only ended up with 9. Started out with about 20. I never saw the casualties. Here they are at 4 weeks. One albino and 8 intermediates.

Can intermediates have bars? The male is albino and the female is intermediate. I'm not that up on genetics but I thought this cross could only produce albinos and intermediates. Is that not correct?

Eddie

Yup, intermediates. They are basically the non albino form with albino genes. ;)

Thanks Eddie. After Jennie posted it I questioned because the intermediate mom does not have bars.

Yeah, it is strange indeed. Wonder what the parents were to the pair.

The bars can come from the albino or its parents. Albinism doesn't allow the fish to show its bars but it will still be passed on to the heterozygous offspring.
