Can someone tell me what range PH you need for wild discus I know they live in low Ph in the wild but what PH can they survive in?

Does this differ from strain to strain?

I thought I had read somewhere you can keep them in low 7 range?

If they need a PH of 6 what would happen if you kept them in 7.5?

I keep mine in the low 7's ro tap mix , I had some kept in 7.5-7-8 for 7-8 yrs. Heckles need lower though.

My brother has a 200 gallon tank and is moving some of his rays out and getting rid of his Siamese Tiger Datnoids. He mentioned maybe getting some wilds to put in there but I wasn't sure if our PH would be good since it runs around 7.5. So any of them but Heckels would be K?

I like to keep mine in a lower gh that's why I mix ro with tap.
I had them in the higher gh (ph 7.8+-) and they showed their stress bars more. in the lower gh I feel they like it better. So IMO they should be fine but lower is better.HTH

I have some test strips for total hardness not sure what it means but the color of the strips match 7 gpg or 120 ppm on the bottle. If any of that makes sense.

Which species of discus are you keeping?

In my experience, you can keep all of them in the low 7s range, but if you want to keep them comfortable and well (which any fishkeeper should really) then only brown/blue discus would be suitable for you. Heckels and Green discus are both more comfortable in much lower pH - preferably in the 5s to low 6s for Greens and even lower for Heckels. You will notice a huge difference in behaviour and colour when you keep them in water that they like - my Heckels coloured up alot more and were not as lethargic when I switched from conditioned tap water (pH in the 6s) to pure RO water (pH in the low 5s).

Which species of discus are you keeping?

I only have domestic discus no wilds but my brother was thinking of getting wilds for his tank if they can handle our water without having to get a RO or anything else.

I'm following Dale Jordan's GH guidelines of something less than 150 ppm. My GH is about 120 ppm and so far the Nhamunda reds I'm keeping seem quite happy. In the month I have had them they only show their stress bars when pushing each other during a feeding session. Dale's sweet spot GH is about 70ish so I will be increasing my RO % in my WCs now that they are in the home tank.

Well ours is 120 ppm so not to bad then I guess. What is your PH?

Thanks Pat, I will let him know he will be able to keep some then. Any type you recommend?

Sean, read this thread,

I am totally NO expert with this but definitely no heckels. I'm sure others can give more specific advice.

Thanks for the info the first part of that thread had useful info on water parameters and meds towards the end.
