So i'll give you the run down on my tank set up. This is my first ever fresh water tank as well!!

Tank-90 gal(3'x2'x2') drilled with overflow and a 40gal sump.
Lights-2-24" t5HO giesemann aquaflor bulbs
Filtration-I have 4 liters of seachem matrix in the sump with 500ml of purigen in a media reactor. I also run a filter sock on the drain to catch all the nasties.
Heater- 300watter
Substarte- 2 50lb bags of pool filter sand for substrate with some sweet pieces of driftwood from the guys at thedriftwoodstore.com. The rock I used is called zebra rock but I need to grab a few more pieces to fill in some more.

I am waiting on plants from a local guy as well. I plan on using some anubias and other low light plants.

Other fish- 20 Red eyed tetras(Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae)
12 Harlequin rasbora (Rasbora heteromorpha)
10 Albino aeneus cory cat (Corydoras aeneus)
12 Blood fin tetras- soon to be moved
3- Long fin plecos

My question is this. I just picked up my first ever discus from Kenny. I got 4 - 4" checkerboard pigeons that look phenomenal in my eyes. But they are so reclusive. I have had them since Sat. and they have eaten frozen blood worms. They tend to stay to the back of the tank behind the drift wood and only venture out a bit when no one is in the room. The tank is in the kitchen which in my house is full of action with 4 kids under the age of 6. I know they can be a shy breed but will they always stay this way being in a pretty high traffic area? I know they are still acclimating to a new tank as well but just need to know if this is going to be an ongoing issue where the tank is resting.

I will get picks up tomorrow of my set up. I also have been doing 30-50 gal water changes on the tank 3 times a week and the water is doing fine.

Also, how long until they start to eat other prepared foods? I have done salt water reef tanks for some time and know that getting fish to switch to other foods can take time. I have a whole arsenal of foods from frozen bloods worms, freeze dried BW, frozen mysis, my own seafood mix that I use in my reef tanks, new life spectrum foods(the best), and a few other tropical flack foods. I also have a buddy on a local forum that make beef heart so I soon will have that as well. So far all the discus have eaten is the frozen BW's.

Thanks and I am glad to have been shown this great site with great info!

I have had discus do this before. Especially in a planted tank. I thought about it once really hard when i had a few that did the same thing. Then i realized the only thing a discus has probably ever seen in its tank is a sponge filter and a heater with the occasional siphon tube. Its probably on system overload since its never seen a grain of sand yet alone a big chunk of driftwood. Give them some time and they will be eating out of your hand before you know it!

thats what I keep telling myself. I know they are still new to the tank as well so they just need to settle in. I need to get some pics to show what I got. the fish from kenny really look great and i just can't wait to see them swimming around naturally

Welcome to SD eranaubs.
I would suspect your new set-up was cycled and water perimeters are in order.
Discus can be somewhat stitish, so having them set-up in a high traffic location is not the best option considering they are still settling in. Was there any problems with existing fish in the past because it appears you just plopped your Discus in with the your other stock.
The added rocks will make cleaning debris from tank bottom an added chore which is an ideal MUST when keeping Discus. All those nasties can lead into Discus health problems if not attended too.
Keep it simple which is what all experienced Discus keepers will always advise

Again good luck and look forward to some pics.

No the tank was fully cycled and the tetras that have been in there are all healthy and have been in there for 2 months. The tank has been up for 3 months. This is definitely not my first rodeo with a tank as I have owned several reef tanks and my latest was is a 400gal sps reef tank. I did not qt these fish so yes I did just PLOP them in there after drip acclimating them for an hour. My reef tanks are BB but I am not into just a tank with fish swimming around. I need a little something to look at!!! The rocks I have in there are positioned so that I can still vacuum around them. I am a hard core vacuumer and I'm pretty dedicated to keeping it clean. I also plan on throwing on my 25watt aqua uv light I have laying around. I know the tank is in a pretty high traffic area but who wants to spend hundreds on fish to stick them in a dark basement room? LOL Thanks guys and I'll throw up pics later on today!

Just give them some time, my fish were skitish for a about a week whenever anyone came into the my room. The discus would see them come in from across the room and then swim to the back corner. They got used to me when they realized I beared bloodworm gifts, and not long after that they were greeting anyone who came into the room :)

I hope that will be the case Elyse!!!! Thanks for the reassurance! The same thing with certain salt water fish as well. As soon as they put two and two together(big scary guy and long red worms= yummy)they come a runnin' and beg all day long!!

Well here are some pics from a quick session. I didn't play with the lighting very much so its a bit blown out. As you can see I still have my driftwood being held down with some of my rocks. I had to tear apart my scape to do so. As soon as the wood is saturated I plan on getting my plants in and rescaping it!

Here is my tank in all its "unfinished glory"!! I need to finish the hanging canopy and paint the rest. Looks like I need to de-clutter the fridge as well! LOL

Its a bit cloudy as I just did a water change. This guy in front is wanting to be a loner and tends to push off others as they get in HIS space!

There he is being a loner!

My tank is in a high traffic area also.Teenager, big dogs, grandchildren.I was trying to get them to slow down, and realized I sounded like a nut.My guys are now just the opposite. They're always out,and when someone walks by,they come out more, expecting food.Hopefully routine will settle them in.I was the same way, with the money spent on these fish,I d@mn well want to see them.Good luck.

well, I think time will be the key. Just a bit ago they all came out in front to eat and even went to the top to pick at food floating as well!!!!
