I have 3 discus that are about 3 inches in a 40 gallon that I am growing out. I also have a 125 gallon with 4 discus that are between 5-8 inches.

How big should I have the smaller ones get before mixing them in with the bigger ones?

If it were me I would put the smaller ones in with the bigger ones.
I have had 2in discus in with 5-6in discus plenty of times in the past with no problems.
As long as they can get plenty of food go for it.

There should be no problem, plenty of room. I like to see pic of that 8" fish.:D

Hey, they said they were between 5" and 8", 5 1/4" qualifies. :)

In my experience the little ones bully the big ones.. brave little hearts they are, or they argue with their own size mostly..I think you will be fine

Thank you everyone for your responses. I added the smaller ones and of course they are all great and seem happier that there are more of them. And now the lower one on the pecking order of my originals can pick on someone!
