Well here goes with my noob question. I have noticed pictures of discus tanks where the sides and back are either painted or clad in some type of siding (ha, ha). Is this for cosmetic purposes or is it for the benefit of the discus??

I have had everything "open" but yesterday I sadly watched a discus somehow get spooked and drive 90 mph into the side of the tank. BTW, I was absolutely still at the time.

Thanks for any shared lessons!

Cosmetic and it also makes the fish feel more secure.

I use foamboard insulation as "siding" on the backs, some sides & bottoms of tanks on iron stands to hold in the heat, reduce electricity usage. Tight lids also serve the same purpose, prevent jumping, too. Some people even cover their tanks with reflectix at night to conserve heat in their tanks.

Insulating helps cut A/C usage in hot summer months, too.

Insulating the tank itself is a great idea.
