I have 1 39 Watt T5 ColorMax light in my fixture. I have no idea when to turn the light on, how long to leave it on or if I should just leave it off all together. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In my bare tank I keep the light on for 16 hours.

I'm currious about how others leave them on for ?

Cheers,

Fred

Mine get turned on at about 7 in the morning and stay on until 10 or 11 after the last feeding is through assuming I get it done early enough to let them eat before I go to bed. Otherwise the 20 year old stepson shuts off the lights when he wanders in, 1 or 2 in the morning maybe? That's a bit long and I have to clean algae once a week, but it's what I do.

Unless of course I have wrigglers or new fry, then it's 24/7.

With no plants and no fry, I only turn the tank lights on when we're home evenings and weekends. Other than that, I just leave to room overhead on when we're gone in winter, open the miniblinds in the summer when there's more light. The discus don't care, as long as there's some light, and I don't see any point to spending money to grow algae that I don't want, anyway.

For my 65G, I only leave my 40W T5 on for 6 hours. But I supplement this with lower intensity LED white lights for another 3 hours or so before and after. I also leave a much lower brightness blue moonlight on all day long.

When do you stop doing the 24/7 lighting for fry? When they reach a certain size or age??

Ditto except I don't have a stepson. :)

When the parents look like they'd like the fry off of them for the night. Sort of varies by batch, as little as a couple of weeks and as much as a month.

I was just picturing mom and dad kicking the kids out of bed. Sorry kids, mom and dad need some time to themselves! :D
