What air pumps do you guys recommend? I have a couple of the Tetra Whisper pumps but it seems that they don't last very long. The cotton filter at the bottom of the pumps seems to turn black. I have one that is rated for 100 gal and it even turned the inside of the tubes (where it releases air from) black. It almost looked like it was burning them. Anyway I am looking to upgrade. My main concern is that they are very quiet.

THANKS

Bought a pond one when I had fish room and it was way to much for application. Tried using it and it blew up. I have used all kinds and don't like anything. Jemcho is one place for them.

I have used Whispers too and I must say, most reliable for my purpose of putting air into my tank. As far as the filter on the bottom, you can replace that with some Fluval polishing pads just cut to size. one box will last you a lifetime!

I did not know that the pad was removable. I will give that a try and see if it works

I seem to be having good success with the Fusion pump. http://www.kensfish.com/fusionairpumps.html

I use a Rena Air 400 on two Hydro V sponges in a 170 gallon and it works great. It's nice an quiet and puts out tons of air, if needed

Depending on what your future plans for possible multiple tanks....you may want to consider a larger pump. One pump-one outlet.
You can get very good deals on e-bay for various size Medo Air pumps. You can bleed off excess air if only running a few tanks.

Your pump intake filter accumulates dirt from the environment around it, so if it gets dirty fast, you may need to pay more attention to the environment. Getting the pump up off the floor usually helps. Pumps can also be wrapped in a piece of filter pad to catch dirt before it gets to the intake.

The fusion 600 & 700 pumps seem to have a good reputation, and they're inexpensive, too. Sometimes it's necessary to vent excess production to prolong pump life, and small mufflers can be fabbed to kill the sound of the vent...
