Ok I officially have the Discus bug right now and plan on setting up at least 2 more tanks in my apartment (I will have a total of 4)! It seems from reading other threads that the background or base colors of the tank may have an effect of the color of the fish in the tanks. My thoughts are to put some blue, green, yellow or even red vinyl layers between the bottom of the tank and the stand. I would also cover 3 sides of the tank with one of those colors. Is anybody doing this? From the pics I see posted I am not seeing that.

Go with white, baby blue, light pink, lavender any pastel color. I've seen some killer looking fish in tanks with BLACK walls but the bottom was white/beige (hint hint). And they were not just Albinos.

I know you mentioned the bottom part to me before Eddie but what about the sides? Is covering the sides overkill?

Its not required, I prefer just the back. It really depends on the location in the room. If the fish can see you enter the room at all angles, they will be as spooked. I have a few tanks with the sides painted and when I all of sudden appear, the fish sometimes spook and dash. Its up to you.

so you paint the glass rather than use a vinyl background?

There are many methods to covering tank walls/bottoms. I prefer paint as it looks so much cleaner. And I have quite a few tanks, all painted different colors.
