I think this may all depend on your water hardness.

Have you tried the plastic ones? These are all I use.

Probably. They are some really crappy ones out there. The plastic ones are good. The ones sold by AquaticEco are good, as well as the ones sold by JEHMCO. The worst ones I've used are the green ones made by Hagen. They literally start coming apart after some use.

I have a 6 incher I use in my garbage can to aerate the water and there's all sort of "green pebbles" on the bottom of it and I've only ran it for about a month....

Any of the above will be your best bang for your buck in terms of performance and long term use. Fully cleanable when dirty, and have proven O2 transfer rates.

I've had good results with the small round grey airstones from Jehmco and the small rectangular white ceramic stones from Kensfish in my sponge filters. They will clog after many months of use, but soaking them in bleach, rinsing, and letting them dry thoroughly makes 'em right again...

I really like the long flexible bubblers - they look great, fit any area and last forever (over five years and still bubbling.)

Some of those are good, some are not. I have some that don't bubble evenly across the entire length, no matter how much air you put into them. These same ones tend to "float up" on the ends, and won't stay put in deep tanks as well. The same is true with some of those "discs", that only provide bubbles over about half of the surface of the stone.

You may need to sit down and talk about the definition of money well spent. Lol! It's better to be up front about what you each expect out of this hobby, especially financial obligations. I've seen fish tanks ruin marriages. Yes, really. Lol!
