is it better to discard the carbon after a while and use the space for just more filter media or should i keep on getting the carbon, and have you guys heard anything about Algone? most of the lfs have been buying those

Don't use any products that the LFS, your set-up is completely different than thiers. Carbon is not used often in discus keeping due to the amount of water people generally change. I'd recommend using a media or sponge that will last and support nitrification. ;)
