I am setting up my new tank 100Gl, I currently have one 40Gl with 4 small discus and some tetras. Is it ok to move the discus to the new tank (not cycled) if I use the 40gl water. I have had the new filter running in the 40gl tank now for a couple of weeks…
I “could” have both tanks but I run the risk of being kicked out the house (significant risk)….
Any feedback and ideas will be appreciated

Do you have a sponge filter in the 40? If you do that would be better to put in the new tank because it has bateria on it to help your new tank cycle faster. You would still need to do large water changes every day until it fully cycles. I've used Tetra Safe Start to cycle my new tank with success. Tetra is live bacteria that you add to the tank immediately after you add your fish. that's what worked for me but I'm sure others will chime in with other suggestions that worked for them.

I think they will if you do large daily water changes. I would invest in the Tetra Safe Start as well because I've had good success with it so far.

you better check for ammonia..

fish in an uncycled tank could die really quick.. if you already moved them... then just keep up the water changes.. thats all you can..

the 40 is an old tank, cycled.
i am moving from my 40 to the 100. the filter that is going to the 100 has been running in the 40 for a couple of weeks. i do 30-40% water changes almost every day

Move the fish and just transfer over the filter from the 40. Watch your levels and get some stability or tetra safestart to get the bio bed rockin.

UV filters are bogus, just not effective in discus keeping IMO. Could have used that money for another few fish to make 6 discus instead of 4 which is the ultimate bad number.

why is 4 bad? i am getting 2 more but i would like to know why 4 is bad? what about 5?
so just the filter and the fish to the new tank, not the old water correct?

6 seems to be the magic number for the HERD MENTALITY that Discus have.. there are social fish and while spreading out their aggression.. with only 4.. it can cause issues.. for the low man

No old water, it has nothing to do with your cycled filter (if its cycled).

As mentioned, discus are schooling fish and they excel in groups, like a tribe. The whole group is one entity. ;)
