Not all discus will reach over 7". This will greatly depend on the genetics and the care you give the fish and the care that the original breeder gave the fish to reach the first 3 inch mark. Assuming good genetics and the fish are only approx 3-4 months of age you should expect it will take approx 10 more months to see your fish reach the goal of 6"+.

well, it depends.. how old it was BEFORE you bought *incase it is already stunted or did have optimal upbringing to get to 3"*
depends how what diet you give it, how many water changes you do, barring any kind of medical issues, the slow down growing as they get older... also.. are you measuring *i hate to bring this topic up*.. from mouth to base of tail.. or mouth to end of tail.. TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MEASUREMENTS..

um.. over a year.. :)
i am not a discus guru .. but i did sleep at a holiday inn express! :)

Hans has offered that domestic discus grow almost imperceptibly once they're 18-24 months old, and that they grow more slowly from 12 months on up. My own limited experience is similar.

Ultimate size depends on genetics and environmental factors, particularly care and feeding early on. Good commercial breeders work hard to get maximum growth early on, to get chunky saleable youngsters in as little time as possible. That pays off for hobbyists who follow through with lots of food and water changes as their fish mature. Intermediate caregivers don't necessarily do as well, so it's smart to deal with ones who are accustomed to discus and whose stock turns over relatively quickly. Skinny youngsters are to be avoided, because they're probably stunted. Just the way it is.

It is time to get back to some forum etiquette. Don't hijack. Don't want to come across as righteous but there has been way to much hyjacking lately and the op deserves to get proper answers to his thread. JMO

...passed out face down in a muddy ditch! :D
Seriously, after about a year to a year and a half, your fish is about as big as it's going to get.

A lot of strains won't make it to 6". Reds tend to be small as do many of the spotted strains.

Background: Are we talking about the background of the aquarium or the ancestors of the fish?
