Going out of town and a friend will stop by to feed my discus. Have 5 tanks and don't have the cash to get 5 auto feeders. Should i have him feed them flake or blood worms, brine shrimp mix? I know beef heart out of the question, with out water changes. The discus are 3 to 4 inches.

Make sure you show him exactly how much to feed.

If they were adults I'd say don't feed but it sounds like they are juvies. Why don't you put a number on each tank, 1-5. Put the amount of flake you would feed each tank in a separate baggie and number each baggie, 1-5. He can use it as an example so he will know how much to feed each tank.

He does have discus, but is a little bit of a over feeder. The discus eat all I feed them every time. Does having pre-portioned cups of blood worms-brine shimp mix in the fridge sound like a good idea?

mmorris, so you think it would be better to just do flake for the 4 days?

No food for 4 days should be fine even for 3 to 4 inch fish.

YSS, never thought to do that. Am always afraid of stunting them.

Others may disagree, but I seriously doubt no food for 4 days will stunt the 3 to 4" fish. If they were around 1", it may be a different story.

YSS, That is good info. 2 of the fish are in hospital tanks. They were treated for internal parasites a couple of weeks ago. They have just started eating better, the 4 days of not getting food for them also. what do you think?

How about 9 days for 3-4 inch juvies? In addition to my sponge filters, I was planning on using a HOB filter with purigen and feeding lightly once a day.

My fish were adults though and I supplemented the water before leaving.

4 days is just fine without any food.

Just think that a lot of Discus breeders starve their fish for 1-2 days before the discus go on a 1-2 day journey to a customer's home. That's 2-4 days without food for a younge juvenile discus from reputable dealers.

Besides, you run the risk of stressing them with a dirty aquarium. Maybe have your friend feed them on the last day before you get back. Then you just reduce the no feeding for 3 days :)

Should be fine, but I will let others chime in.

Geez, late again, but...I have a fish feeder come every other day, juvies &/or adults. Not enough for water quality to deteriorate much or fish to pout. I have her give flakes &/or pellets in pre-measured amounts. They're happy to see me & get "real" food again & water changes when I return.
