Doesn't look to be too bad, would keep fish in salt solution 1 tablespoon per 10 gallon concentration to keep fungal infection down. Change water regularly so quality stays high and the fin should repair itself within a few weeks.

I have plants and was told salt hurts the plants? True? Will water change do the job without salt?

Torn fins on mine generally heal up in less than a week. I would just leave it be.

Salt would definitely kill the plants. You can leave it and just make sure the water stays clean or put it in QT if you notice the fin turning white and getting worse and do salt treatment.

Clean water, good diet, leave alone unless something secondary develops...
