Hi,

I want to know if its possible to have a community tank of Discus in a 55 gallon. I want to have atleast 5 or 6 adults in it. I would also like to have gravel in it. But many people don't recoment gravel. I have try BB before but my water would stay cloudy.

If I do set up this tank I would have a Canister 405, two sponge filters, and do 50% water changes two times a week. Is this posible ?

Thanks.

your water will stay cloudy? looks like your did not even cycle if it stays cloudy. And yes you can keep 5 to 6 in a 55. Just watch your water parameters to determine how much water changes and water % you need to change out.

Having no gravel shouldn't make your water cloudy. It's not like substrate acts as a filter.

Sorry I wasn't directly responding to your comment. But yes you are right. If its un cycled then it will be cloudy.

If you are going to use a substrate go with a pool filter sand much easier to clean than gravel imo

Pool filter sand looks good at first but its gonna get dirty and darker over time.

Clean it daily and it will get dirty and dark?? No chance.

You don't even have to clean it daily more like weekly and it still won't accumulate dirt or darken. As was said above substrate does not act as a filter.

Well, obviously not if it's daily gravel vacuuming lol

But he has adult discus so weekly water changes like above me said and the gravel should be fine.

But if he only does water changes with no gravel cleaning then it will get dirty and darken.

Barebottom tank with paint on underside/back is way to go.. that way i don't have to worry about cleaning substrate! :)

But bare bottom in my opinion is ugly.

Ive seen some discus tanks where its bare bottom with decorations here and there and I think it looks absolutely horrible. It takes the creativity out of owning an aquarium.

I know it's all about the fish. But to me a fish like this deserves a beautiful world to live in. As long as you keep up with maintenance, I think it much more rewarding to have beautiful world surround by beautiful fish especially discus.

Ah, but again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder,eh?..I'm enthralled with the sight of Heckel's foraging in the sand in their tank, and just as awestruck by a chunky pair of breeder's in a BB with a sponge, and similarly impressed with a swarm of fry in a BB 40.....it is about the fish, IMO

Like said I know it's all about the fish.

I just think it takes the fun out of owning an aquarium with barely anything in there.
