These tests are straight from the tap.

PH 7.4
Nitrate 0ppm
Ammonia 0ppm
GH 5dkh
KH 8dkh

So what do you guys think?

Sounds good. Have you aerated your tap water over a 24 period to see to you get a ph swing? If not you might consider trying that.

Welcome to the forum.

I have yet to try that. It's funny cause I wanted to for the last few days, since I want to store the dechlorinated tap water in a heated food and water safe barrel for my upcoming 90 gallon aquarium.

Im gonna do it right now.

And my current PH in my 40 gallon and 12 gallon are both 7.4.

SHould I add prime to the tap as well or just do straight tap?

To do your 24 hour test? I wouldn't unless you want to use the water in a tank. Sounds like your ph will remain the same over the 24 hour period. Are your 40 and 12 gallon cycled freshwater tanks?

Yes they are.

Id still like to experiment with this test. It's hard to tell those minute differences with the API color chart. Id say to be safe the difference from my tap to aquariums are maybe .2ppm above 7.4ppm it's really hard to make a solid observation.

Good idea to know your water parameters.

Now im confused lolo It seems my PH out of the tap is actually around 6.8 and my tank is 7.6..

Jeez thats a big swing. Im gonna test it again.

Maybe I need to start aging the water before I put it into my existing tank?

The fish are fine. But I never thought it was that big of a difference. I feel like an idiot.:(

Tested twice and I read it wrong again.

This is for sure what the results are.

Tap PH 6.5
Aquarium PH 7.6

Agreed, Sounds like you need to age your water.

Do you know what specific container I can use?

Brute?

And will 7.6 ph be good for Discus?

Im gonna search around lowes and home depot tomorrow to get a 44 gallon NSF standard #2 and #21 food safe brute container.

I just realized that the containers I used to fill water up with are the bad recycled kind that can leach chemicals.

This is so much fail for me in one night. argh..

7.6 should be fine.

Good, I have two 44 and two 33s.

Try looking on your local Craigslist for blue/white 55 gal storage barrels. Anything that once held food or food-grade additives will be fine. I got mine for $12

The Brute cans are excellent. I have used them for a couple of years now. Your PH rising after sitting for 24 hours is not unusual at all. When it ages the Co2 is gassed off which causes the PH to rise. I wouldn't worry about aging the water for your other fish. This topic is debated quite often but my personal belief is that a PH swing due to off gassing of Co2 will not adversely affect your fish. I age my water primarily so I will have it heated to the exact temp I am looking for. I would bet a very high percentage of aquarist around the world don't age water before doing water changes on a community tank. With Discus we take a lot more care than the average aquarist though. Partly becaues of the expense of the fish and maybe partly because they are more sensitive to water changes or maybe better put water quality than other fish??

You guys are right. Ill wait till the new tank set up starts rolling along in a few months to get the containers for age and heat the water for the discus.
