View Full Version : Discus and Aquarium Abbreviations

I noticed there was not a good list of abbreviations any where on the site. There's one on the main site, but it's short. I also did a search but nothing really comprehensive.

I know it took me quite a while to learn most of the abbreviations and I'm still learning. This isn't meant to be all inclusive but it's a good start. It also doesn't include a lot of common aquarium abbreviations if they're not very applicable to Discus. I broadened it a little to other aquarium topics but not so far as to include some that deal with other types of fish (some of them speak completely different acronym languages).

I'm sure people will suggest others and I'm sure I'll wish I had included some that I didn't put as soon as I hit 'submit'.

Anyway, HTH!

DT - Display Tank

ericatdallas
07-01-2011, 03:13 PM
I'm not sure DT is typically associated with "Deep Tank" in the Discus-world or even the Aquarium/Pond world. I think for "deep" tanks, people usually say "high (H)" or "tall".

I guess it's not really up to me to decide... oh wait, it's my thread, so... DENIED ;) j/k

Just for Skip...http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?90014-UPS-for-your-discus-tank

UPS - Uninterruptible Power Supply

(Typically used for computers, but there's no reason why it couldn't be used for aquariums except a typical system would not have enough stored energy to power aquariums for long).

This should be made into a Sticky!!! Great information

Mike

I was actually kind of surprised there wasn't already a sticky with the abbreviations that's why I made it.

The main site already has a list though, but it's not very complete, so it just needs to be updated ... http://www.simplydiscus.com/library/misc/articles/abbreviation.shtml

Who do we have to contact to request that this be made a sticky??

Thanks,
Mike

So helpful! Taken me forever to get the few I now know! I'm bookmarking this page in my computer of nothing else! Hopefully it gets made into a sticky.

This is great! I just love it when I'm trying to find something out and I find the answer, only it goes like this- "All you have to do is put the KKG under the CT valve, buy a BNGD, (they're cheap) and place it all in your FBB. But whatever you do, NEVER leave the FLT set at PIJ or you will kill everything."
And I'm like,....."Thanks."

What does "TOTE" stand for?

As in Rubbermaid Tote? if so, in this case it's just another word for container, not an acronym.

I cant believe PP is used for potassium permanganate instead of KMnO4, but oh well. I've got to go make water or as some might say go PP.
