Would it be a good/bad idea to leave a small night light on in the aquarium room? Wondering if turning on the lights would scare them too much. I have had other fish that would go nuts when I turned the light on all of the sudden.

It's never actually pitch black in the river, so nightlights are ok in your home. My fish have a nightlight near the tank that my husband uses to navigate when he gets up at 4am, and then a light over the stove that adds a bit more light within the tank (tank is in the great room).

They don't seem to mind the night light at all and settle in nicely to go to sleep when the lights go out overhead.

Some folks leave their lights on 24/7...Not me, my electric bill is already outrageous,but..in a corner of the fishroom, I leave a bare bulb, cf 6500K lamp running overnite, and the fish find it works like twilight...My youngest daughter doesn't usually get in until around 4 a.m., so it also keeps her from startling a lot of fish...
