I have a 55gal discus tank. With lots of live plants which are swords. Right now I have sand on the bottom. But I'm trying to found what other people are using in there tanks.

I'm using Pool filter sand with root tabs, plants are growing out nicely...

I also have an 55GA planted tank, mostly swords and vals. Used pool filter sand mixed with some flourite and root medic tabs, excellent results so far...

I'm using ADA Amazonia II right now good for buffering down to a ph of 6.5 and unreal for plant growth results, But I'm going to try a DIY substrate with propagating sand (also has clay in it) with marble chips and blood and bone fert mix, I have tryed it on 30cm cube and got a half decent result so on to the 5ft now

White silica pool filter sand, with root tabs & liquid ferts - works extremely well for me.
