Hot Magnum and fiber clear (DE alternative)

I wanted to share my experiences with using the Hot magnum with fiber clear the DE alternative. I originally wanted to get a Vortex DE filter about 6 months back but had trouble finding them as they were all back order and no info on when they may become available. So I did some reserach on this site to see what others were using. Most people were using one of the magnum type filters but I still had the problem of finding DE. I was weary of using pool grade DE so I researched some more online and found that professional aquariums were using this stuff called fiber clear a food grade perfectly safe DE alternative. I called the company they confirmed that it was safe for aquarium use and that they know of a few aqariums using the stuff. I choose the
Hot magnum because it is easy to hook up and get running and move as there are no hoses. I let the filter run overnight to two days and the water column is spotless it filters down to 1 micron. I have been using this setup for at least 6 months now and have seen no ill effects. My discus have laid eggs while the filter was in use And I dont have to worry about breathing the stuff in. I use a 1/2 cup of fiber clear with the micron filter cartridge. Just wanted to inform eveyone that there is an excellent alternative to the Vortex.

Is it the magnum 250 you use and if so how much of this product do you put into the filter??? The reason I ask is that I have a magnum i am not using and could move from tank to tank. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info. How often do you run the filter, and how often do you change the media?

yes I use the Hot Magnum 250(hang on the tank) I put in a 1/2 to 3/4 cup

I run it overnight sometimes up to 2 days at that point the filter will need to be cleaned. The magnum filter will be filthy brown. I rinse off the fiber clear and let the micron filter soak in bleach to get clean and white again.

Hi keif......do u run the HT 250 24/7 or just polish the water from time to time?......thinking of getting the Marineland Magnum 350.

ya I just use the Hot 250 to polish from time to time. I run it with the micron cartridge and 1/2 cup fiber clear overnight once every two weeks or so.
